He froze.

Her voice trembled, eyes brimming with resentment.

“She hated my wedding designs. You defended me out loud, but what did you actually do?”

“You scrapped every plan we’d made and personally went over every single detail to change it – wasn’t it. Wasn’t that all just to give her a surprise?”

“You didn’t even notice, did you?”

“You’ve been so busy planning the wedding, you barely have time to eat with me anymore, haven’t told me a

bedtime story in ages.”

“You’ve changed!”

Adrian closed his eyes, rubbing his temples hard.

When he opened them again, exhaustion sat deep in his gaze.

“Serena, I have to start a family eventually.”

“You can’t stay a kid forever.”

“I don’t care!”

Tears rolled down her cheeks in fat drops.

“You’re all I have. You can’t not want me!”

Watching her cry, shaking all over, something in him softened.

“I’m not giving up on you.”

He sighed, pulling her into his arms.

“But you can’t play with someone’s life like this. That’s too far.”

She sobbed into his chest, then asked quietly.

“Is she dead?”

“She’s not dead!”

He cut in almost instantly.

His tone was absolute, more like he was trying to convince himself.

“She just ran off somewhere.”

“Maybe she’s just faking pitiful, trying to make you panic.”

Serena mumbled under her breath.

His expression cooled slightly.

“Elara isn’t like that. Don’t badmouth her again.”

Her tears welled up again.

Irritation churned inside him, but he kept his temper in check

Serena answered, nasal and reluctant.

He sighed inwardly.

She looked up, tears still in her eyes.

If it had been before, his heart would’ve melted instantly, and he’d have said yes right away.

He froze for a second, then turned, confused.

“Who is this?”

“Why did you call me here to identify a body?”

The enforcer’s expression was complicated.

“Do you know a Ms. Elara?”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re telling me this is her?”
