Was this a marriage or a funeral?

But he just smiled faintly at her.

“And mango-flavored cake?”

I was allergic to mango.

He nodded anyway.

“Whatever you want.”

I cut in.

“I’m tired. Go plan it somewhere else.”

The room went quiet for a second.

Serena pouted.

“What, you think my ideas suck?”

“Of course not. Serena’s got great taste.”

He pulled her into his side, glancing at me.

“Apologize to her, or you’re not staying in this infirmary either.”

Whatever warmth was left in my chest went cold for good.

I yanked the IV needle out of my hand, let the blood well up, and got out of bed, kicking the blanket pushed

aside.

Serena’s eyes lit up. She planted her hands on her hips, blocking my way.

“Bro, is she lying to you?”

“If she really couldn’t handle it, why isn’t she resting up properly?”

“This isn’t just her faking it for sympathy, is it?”
