My voice wasn’t loud, but it cut through the garden air.

Theron stood frozen, pale as death. “R-Rhea? What are you doing here? How long have you been listening?”

“Just arrived.” I walked over slowly, my tone flat. “Heard enough. Saves me having to ask.”

“That’s not what it looked like!” He stepped toward me, but I moved away.

He scrambled to explain. “Sienna was talking nonsense. Don’t take it seriously.”

“Nonsense?” I scoffed, glancing at Sienna’s stomach.

“Promising her you wouldn’t touch me until the baby was stable was nonsense? Hand-signing the wrong healing potion for me—was that nonsense too?”

At the mention of the potion, something clicked. “What are you talking about? That was a restorative. Why would I hurt you?”

I shook my head, a faint smile on my lips. “You didn’t hurt me. You helped me. Helped me see this relationship for the joke it was. Helped me make up my mind to leave.”

Sienna snapped, “Rhea Carter! Leave Theron alone! He loves me. If you hadn’t come between us, we’d have been together years ago!”

“I’m carrying his child now. You have no right to stay!”

I turned to Theron. “She’s telling me to go.”

His face twisted. “Rhea, let’s go home and talk.”

I laughed, hollow. “I don’t have a home anymore. No one needs to kick me out. I’m leaving on my own, and I’m never coming back.”

I showed no emotion. I turned and walked away.

“Rhea! Wait!” Theron chased after me, grabbing at my arm. “Explain yourself!”

I stopped, yanking free. “There’s nothing to say. We’re done.”

Sienna followed, clutching his sleeve. “Let her go! Her leaving is best!”

But Theron ignored her, his eyes locked on me. “You’re not well. Where are you going? Let me take you.”

“None of your business.”

I hadn’t gone far when a sharp pain bloomed in my chest.

I stumbled, forcing myself to stay upright.

I wanted to see my friend one last time.

Theron noticed. His face changed. “What’s wrong? Are you in pain? Let me take you back for a check!”

“Don’t pretend you care.” I turned my face away. “Go be with Sienna. Leave me alone.”

I hailed a cab and gave the address in Silvermoon.

Theron stood there, watching the taxi drive away. He didn’t follow.

Sienna came up beside him, annoyed. “Good. She’s gone. What were you chasing her for?”

He didn’t answer. His face was dark as thunder.

Inside the cab, I leaned back. The pain in my chest was growing sharper by the second.
