I stared at the glass of milk as a chill crept down my back.

The housekeeper placed it in front of me.

“Miss Serrano, you should drink it while it’s warm.”

I looked up at her.

Her eyes remained lowered, but I noticed the slight tremor in her fingers.

Across the table, Nero took a slow sip of tea.

“A pregnant woman needs to be particularly careful about what she eats and drinks.”

I smiled, picked up the glass, and held it out to him.

“Since you’re so concerned about me, why don’t you take the first sip?”

Nero’s expression changed.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

I loosened my grip.

The glass fell onto the carpet, spilling milk everywhere.

The housekeeper immediately dropped to her knees.

“Miss Serrano, I never meant any harm.”Lucian looked at one of his guards.

“Test it.”

Nero slammed his palm against the table and stood.

“What exactly are you implying, Lucian?”

Lucian’s face remained expressionless.

“This is my home. You don’t give orders here.”

The housekeeper was escorted out.

Ten minutes later, the guard returned with the preliminary test results. The milk contained a

substance that could trigger uterine bleeding. Even in a small dose, it could have caused severe bleeding this early in my pregnancy.

My mother covered her mouth as tears spilled from her eyes. My father’s face hardened.

Nero immediately tried to defend himself.

Lucian rose and kicked the coffee table over.

The violent crash silenced the entire room.

He drew his gun and pressed the barrel against Nero’s temple.”Touch her again and see what happens. “Nero’s face flushed with rage.

“You’re threatening an elder over a woman?”

Lucian’s eyes hardened. “You should be grateful she didn’t drink it.”

It was the first time I had seen this side of him.

He lowered the gun at once, turned around, and lifted me into his arms. Every face in the room changed.

Ryan tried to follow us, but Lucian glanced back at him.

“Get lost.”

At the hospital, the doctor examined me and said the pain had been caused by shock and stress. For now, the baby appeared stable.I lay in bed while tears continued to slide down my cheeks.

Lucian sat beside me, silently wiping them away.

The more I thought about what had happened, the more unfair it all felt.”All I did was get pregnajit. Why does everyone suddenly want to kill me?”

Lucian’s fingers stilled against my cheek.

“It won’t happen again.”

I sniffed.

“What good is your promise? The Orsinis are everywhere. You have more relatives than I can

count.”

He lowered his gaze to me.

“Tomorrow, we’ll go to the City Clerk’s Office and get married.”I stared at him.

“What?”

“You’ll become Mrs. Orsini. My wife.” His voice remained calm, as though he were discussing a business arrangement. “Once that happens, anyone who wants to hurt you will have to consider the price of touching the Don’s wife.”

I blinked at him.

“Was that supposed to be a proposal?”

Lucian was silent for a moment.

“Yes.”

I grabbed a pillow and hit him with it.

“Where’s the ring? Where are the flowers? Aren’t you even going to get down on one knee?”

He didn’t dodge the pillow. Instead, he caught my hand and held it firmly in his.

“We’ll get legally married first. Afterward, I’ll give you the grandest wedding you could ever want.”

It was a shamelessly sweet promise.I loved every word of it.

Just then, my mother’s voice came from outside the hospital room.

“Livia, I’d like to speak with you alone.”

The comments slowly drifted into view.
