After the meeting ended, he walked over to me. I was about to step faster to get past him, but he caught my elbow.

I quickly held up my files to block, flipped them open like I was busy, and glared at him.

He smiled a little, leaned in like we were discussing work, and whispered in my ear, “Come home early tonight. We’ll have dinner together.”

“We’ll see.” I mumbled, keeping my head down.

His eyes went deep. “Sheryl, ever since… I came back from Europe, we haven’t had dinner together in ages.

“You always say you don’t have time.

“It’s either overtime, or you already have plans with other people. You avoid any time you might have to sit at the same table as me, even avoid being in the same room as me.”

He stared at me, stubborn and wouldn’t let go.

I furrowed my brow, and gave in quietly. “Okay, I got it.”

Satisfied with my answer, he let go of my arm.

We walked out of the building together.

Edward’s car was already waiting outside.

When we got to it, the passenger door opened.

Queenie got out.

She smiled, nodded at our general manager, smiled at Edward, like she didn’t even see me.

“I’m here to pick Edward up.”

Edward furrowed his brow, and looked at me instinctively.

The general manager smoothly jumped in. “So you have a beautiful lady waiting, Mr. Lawrence, that’s why you’re in such a hurry to leave.”

He then turned to me meaningfully. “The day after tomorrow Mr. Lawrence is visiting our branch project site. Sheryl, make sure you host Mr. Lawrence and Ms. Laird well, okay?”

Edward started. “Queenie isn’t…”

I’d already nodded. “Everything’s already arranged. All of Mr. Lawrence and Ms. Laird’s itineraries are scheduled together.”

Edward cut off mid-sentence, froze completely.

“Sheryl…”

I cut him off. “Mr. Lawrence, do you have any other special instructions?”

Edward stared at me and said nothing. Only when Queenie called his name did he get in the car with a cold face.

I looked away and turned around.
