## [Elena’s POV]

The next day, I slipped into a long dress and heels, then pushed open the doors to the wedding venue.

Nathan and Vivian were exchanging rings.

The moment I walked in, the entire ballroom fell silent.

Pat shot up and blocked my way.

“What are you doing here? This is my daughter’s wedding. Don’t cause a scene. Leave now!”

She tried to shove me, but I sidestepped her.

Nathan’s mother stood as well and walked over, far calmer than Pat, before taking my hand.

“Elena, I know you and Nathan grew up together, so it’s natural that you have feelings for him. But he’s marrying Vivi now. If you still care about the years you’ve shared, don’t ruin this for them.”

Everyone stared at me like I was a threat.

I smiled and held up the invitation.

“Nathan and Vivian invited me. What’s wrong with me being here?”

Vivian hurried over in her gown.

“That’s right, Mom. I invited Elena. We’re best friends, after all.”

Pat shot me a hateful look.

“Her mother just died, and now she’s bringing funeral gloom into a wedding. What terrible luck.”

I stared at her, expressionless.

“Pat, when you were buying a house last year, my mom cashed out part of her 401(k) to lend you the down payment without hesitation. Now you’re calling her bad luck?”

I held out my hand.

“Pay me back. Fifteen thousand six hundred dollars. Since we’ve been neighbors for years, I won’t charge you interest.”

Pat’s face went rigid.

Nathan strode over, frowning.

“Elena Reyes, do you have to humiliate everyone like this?”

Pat lifted her chin, spraying spittle as she spoke.

“Everyone knows exactly what you’re after! My daughter was blind to call you a friend. You went after her fiancé, and now you’ve come to ruin her wedding!”

The guests stared with their mouths open, then began whispering.

“I heard she was pregnant with Nathan Hayes’s baby.”

“Didn’t she and Vivi grow up together? How could she do that?”

“She practically worried her own mother to death.”

I dug my nails into my palms.

I looked at Nathan and Vivian.

“Don’t worry. I’m only here to give you a wedding present.”

Vivian’s face relaxed a little.

Nathan still looked wary.

I walked straight past them to the center of the ballroom and took the microphone from the MC.

Facing the crowd, I spoke slowly and clearly.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to congratulate the happy couple.

Please look at the screen.”
