Mason stepped forward, watching Ethan warily. Then he turned to me with a warm smile. “Ma’am,

we’re heading to a barbecue next. Do you want to come with us?”

Ethan’s eyes dimmed. He looked at me, voice low and pleading. “Don’t go, Sophia…”

I stared at his red-rimmed eyes and said nothing.

Hope flickered in his gaze.

Just as he thought I was walking toward him, he reached out his hand.

I said softly, “Okay.”

Then I walked out with Mason.
