The Comments Said the Heartthrob Confessed Wrong, So I Rejected Him Chapter 08

By morning, the news was everywhere.

Girls stared at Brynn in the bathroom. She didn’t care.

She owned it every time someone asked.

She was so into the attention that she suggested we hit the dining hall for breakfast-something she never did.

We grabbed food and found a spot.

Then Griffin and his roommates walked in.

Eyes locked across the room. The whole dining hall turned to watch.

A beat of silence, then whistles and cheers.

Brynn flushed and waved at Griffin.

I ducked my head, trying to disappear.

Griffin’s friend nudged him. “Your girl’s over there. You really gonna stay away?”

Griffin didn’t look away.

His friend followed his gaze, then glanced at his frowning buddy.

“Heard she’s broke. You feeling bad watching her eat just a bagel?”

“You’re loaded, man. Help her out.”

Griffin whipped around, his voice ice-cold.

“Don’t say that again. She works hard. She doesn’t need me.”

“And she’s not my girlfriend. She turned me down.”

Griffin rarely showed emotion. Anger, for him, was usually just a cold look.

But this was different. Raw. Obvious.

Brynn waved and waved. Griffin never came.

Whispers started.

Then a snicker.

“Guess someone threw herself at him and got shut down. So embarrassing.”

Brynn’s jaw tightened, her face twisting with barely contained rage.

She didn’t go after the person mocking her.

She turned on me. “Sage. Go save us seats in class. You can eat your bagel on the way.”

“What are you waiting for? Go!”

She wasn’t quiet about it. She was publicly taking it out on me.

But the comments were still on her side.

[Brynn is so kind. She’s getting humiliated and she’s still trying to protect Sage. That’s class.!

[That’s why I love her. She’s got this thing-she can be hurting, but she’ll still make sure everyone’s okay.]

[But that bitch’s not worth it. I saw her shift when Griffin looked over. She was totally trying to get his attention.]

I ignored the twisted logic and stood up.

Any other day, I’d have refused to be spoken to like that.

But now? I felt Griffin watching me.

Better to leave.

I grabbed the half-eaten bagel from my tray and walked out.

As I passed a table, I caught their whispers.

“Griffin just went over to Brynn. He is dating her after all.”
