The Comments Said the Heartthrob Confessed Wrong, So I Rejected Him Chapter 01

All because I wore a mask outside, the campus heartthrob mistook me for my roommate—the actual campus queen—and confessed to me.

I was about to say he had the wrong person when a barrage of comments flashed before my eyes.

[This bitch is so shameless. She pretends to take off her mask to prove she’s not the Brynn, but really she’s just flaunting that face, the one that makes Griffin lose control every single time.]

[It’s fine. Even if she gets to him first, our girl can just use her alt account to flirt with a bunch of guys, then drop hints in front of Griffin just to make him jealous.]

[Griffin’s got major OCD. He can’t stand anyone touching what’s his. She’ll end up getting forced out, slinking back to her nowhere hometown, and marrying some random loser.]

I couldn’t drop out. And I couldn’t afford to piss off people like them—the golden kids who had everything handed to them.

So I just quietly took the bouquet for my roommate.

I grew up poor.

So poor that when my campus-queen roommate saw I only owned two faded t-shirts, she insisted I take something from her closet.

That one swap turned into a mess. The campus heartthrob got the wrong idea.

And I got cornered.

I was in a hurry, didn’t want to waste time explaining, and reached up to pull off my mask to clear things up.

Then I saw those weird comments.

Poor kids don’t get do-overs.

I’d fought tooth and nail to get into this university. I was the pride of my whole hometown. I couldn’t let myself get forced out.

Even if those comments weren’t real, I couldn’t take that risk.

After a few seconds of hesitation, I reached out and took the flowers.

I figured I’d hand them over to my roommate, untouched, once I got back from my shift.

By nine that night, the dorm was buzzing louder than usual.

My roommates were huddled together, jaws dropped.

“Wait, Griffin’s actually taken? Who moved that fast? She snatched our Student Body President!”

“It’s real. He’s going nuts in the group chat—Venmo-ing everyone left and right. I’ve already received almost a hundred bucks. That’s like, my grocery money for the week.”

Unlike the other two, Brynn was glued to her phone, her eyebrows pinched so tight they almost touched.

She had a thing for Griffin. Pretty much the whole school knew it.

I walked over carefully, the bouquet cradled in my arms.

My footsteps made them look up.

“Ooh, Sage, who sent those? Did someone finally confess?”

Brynn glanced up too, a sneer curling her lip.

“Pfft. A hundred roses? Please. These days you need at least a thousand. But for a small-town girl like you? I guess that’ll do.”

I didn’t bite. Just held out the bouquet, my arm already aching.

“Yours.”

A pause. Then I added:

“Griffin sent them.”

The air went dead quiet.

Brynn shot up from her chair so fast she almost knocked it over, grabbing my arm. “What do you mean? Explain.”

She was so worked up her nails dug into my skin.

I tried to pull back. She only gripped harder.

So I told her the whole thing—how Griffin got the wrong girl.

The other two roommates crowded in, firing questions.

“Brynn, when did you two even meet? Did you already know him from Student Council?”

Brynn’s eyes darted away for a second. Then she pressed her face into the roses, all full makeup and performance.

“Yeah, Griffin’s helped me out a few times. I kinda felt like he was into me, but I never thought he’d actually make a move.”

I tuned out the rest and headed for the sink to wash up.

That’s when the comments showed up again.
