He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 16

He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 16

Before we parted, we added each other back on Instagram.

After that, he often came to see me.

He offered to drive me to and from work.

It made me think of the necklace he had given me back then, when he said he only wanted to be my

friend.

I had kept that necklace with me all this time.

I was just afraid of losing or damaging it, so I kept it in its box and hardly ever took it out.

Less than two years had passed.

Yet looking back, it felt like another lifetime.

Nolan stayed in Harbor Point for a long time.

Even after the project ended, he still did not leave.

Once, out of curiosity, I asked him about it.

He looked at me with a perfectly serious expression.

“Oh,” he said, “I still have something important here. I won’t be leaving anytime soon.”

In private, one of my coworkers gossiped with me.

“Is Mr. Voss pursuing you? No wonder you turned down all those guys before. Turns out you knew

someone like him.”

I froze.

“That’s not true.”

A couple of days later, Nolan took me hiking.

But on the way there, the car nearly got into an accident. Without thinking, he leaned over, trying to shield me with his body.

Luckily, we arrived safely.

When we got there, he lowered his eyes and looked at me.

His voice was a little hoarse.

The easy confidence he had when we first met was gone.

“For the past two years,” he said, “the thing I’ve regretted most, over and over again in the middle of the night, was not being there with you back then.”

Hearing that, even if I had been completely clueless, I should have understood that he saw me differently.

Almost as if pulled by something I could not explain, I opened my mouth.

“Nolan.”

He looked up.

I smiled faintly. “My coworker asked me if you were pursuing me.”

He froze for a second and stared at me.

Then, almost unconsciously, he lifted a hand and touched the bridge of his nose.

“What do you think?” he asked.

I said, “Back then, I didn’t think so.”

“But now, I think maybe I can flatter myself a little.”
