My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 13

I had known about the later transfers, but only after the divorce proceedings began did Dylan tell me Kevin had started moving money less than six months after leaving the country.

At first, Dylan assumed Kevin wanted him to manage Margaret’s expenses and paid little attention.

When the transfers became larger and more frequent, he realized something was wrong.

“Whatever he sends you, document it,” I told Dylan. “The children will need money later, and a paper trail is better than a secret.”

I instructed Dylan to keep every confirmation and turn the records over to my attorney.

Kevin trusted his mother and younger brother as his own people.

It was time he learned what betrayal by his own family felt like.

After the divorce, Dylan officially moved in with me.

The children were already close to him, so teaching them to call him Dad was easy.

Kevin remained their legal father until the court changed the order, so I did not prevent his

scheduled visitation.

“Call him Uncle. I’m your father,” Kevin corrected them during one of his visits.

Every time Nason and Lilly ran into Dylan’s arms calling him Daddy, Kevin’s face turned red with

fury.

“You’re not Daddy. You’re the delivery man,” Nason said.

“No, Nason,” Lilly argued. “He’s the food delivery man.”

The children surrounded Kevin and debated which type of delivery man he was.

The comments appeared.

[She’s so manipulative. Did she teach the children to say that?]

[Kevin pays her thousands every month, and they won’t even call him Dad?]

[Wait… neither child looks anything like Kevin.]

“Alison, I pay you $20,000 every month for these children, and this is what you teach them?”

Kevin chased me into the kitchen and demanded an explanation.

“Kevin, that’s not fair. Have you seen how expensive everything is?”

“$20,000 doesn’t go far anymore. Besides, Mom and I have to eat too. Supporting your elderly mother is your responsibility.”

“That money isn’t only for the children.”

Kevin stormed out and slammed the door behind him.

A week later, he returned.

“Alison, Amelia and I can never have children. You’re already overwhelmed raising two, so why don’t you let us raise Lilly?”

“Amelia has a good heart. She’ll treat Lilly well. You can focus all your attention on Nason.”

“Don’t worry. The child support won’t change. I’ll still transfer $20,000 every month.”

Honestly, I wasn’t particularly attached to the idea of keeping Lilly.

She wasn’t mine biologically, though I was her legal mother.

As long as Margaret’s blood stayed in the household, it didn’t matter much to me who raised her.

But Kevin could not simply take a child because he felt lonely. Any change in custody would require

court approval.

Before I could answer, a voice came from behind us.

“What did you just say?”

Margaret stood in the doorway.

Her expression was terrifyingly cold.
