My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 11

“Mom, are you crazy? The judge was asking Alison, not you.”

Kevin stared at Margaret in alarm, apparently assuming she had become confused.

Margaret ignored him.

“My daughter-in-law is the best daughter-in-law anyone could ask for.”

“For the past three years, while my son was overseas, she cared for me and raised both children.

She worked herself to the bone.”

I stared at her.

Was she really talking about me?

“My son did transfer a lot of money to Alison, but my younger son and I spent most of it.”

“Dylan needed capital for his company, and my health isn’t good, My medical bills alone cost a

fortune every year.”

“If you don’t believe me, check Alison’s bank records. She transfers thousands of dollars to me

every month for personal expenses.”

I did transfer money to Margaret every month.

But it paid for household bills and her daily expenses.

“My son started seeing another woman three years ago. He has lived with his mistress this entire

time.”

“He transferred marital assets into her name and bought her an apartment in New York. That

money belonged to the marriage.”

Margaret glared at Kevin.

“He sold out his own wife and family.”

“Ma’am, do you have evidence to support these accusations?” Kevin’s attorney demanded.

Margaret reached into her purse and pulled out a cloth bundle.

She unwrapped it layer by layer, revealing an old-fashioned digital recorder.

I had bought it for her a few days earlier.

It had taken me half a day to teach her how to record anything.

Our attorney had already confirmed that the state followed one-party consent rules. Because Margaret had participated in the conversation, she could legally record it.

“I recorded him,” Margaret announced. “My son asked me to lie about my daughter-in-law. He wanted me to say she was lazy, abusive, and disrespectful.”

“I’m going to let everyone hear it now.”

Margaret glanced at me and pressed Play.

Kevin panicked.

“Mom, I’m your son. Why are you helping her?”

Margaret spat toward him.

“I don’t have a son like you.

Kevin’s voice filled the courtroom.

“Mom, when we get to court, tell them Alison is lazy. Say she hits you and curses at you.’

“I have to get temporary custody of both children. Amelia loves kids, and I want her to experience being a mother.”

“Don’t worry about the marital assets. I’ve already moved most of them. Alison won’t get much in the divorce, but I won’t let her starve.”

When the recording ended, the spectators erupted into whispers.

“I’ve never seen a mother-in-law help her daughter-in-law in court. That son is disgusting.”

“His poor wife. Imagine being married to a snake like that.”

“Children belong with the parent who actually raised them.”

“Order!” The judge struck the gavel.

The recording did not end the divorce that day.

Instead, it triggered a financial fraud inquiry, an order preserving all remaining marital assets, and

an emergency temporary custody ruling keeping the children with me until the full case could be investigated.

The judge called a thirty-minute recess before announcing the temporary orders.
