My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 10

The floating comments appeared.

[Here it comes. Kevin is about to ask for a divorce.]

[Kevin loves Amelia so much. She lost her chance to become a mother because of him, so he got a

vasectomy.]

[That’s insane. They’re obviously true love.]

[If this side character hadn’t gotten in the way, Kevin and Amelia would’ve been together years

ago.]

I nearly laughed until I cried.

What a joke.

Kevin had been the one who pursued me first. How was it my fault that he hadn’t met Amelia

earlier?

“Go ahead.”

I suppressed the urge to punch him.

Kevin lowered his head and worried his bottom lip for a long time. Finally, he released a heavy sigh.

“I want a divorce.”

The moment the words left his mouth, his entire body visibly relaxed.

“Why?” I asked, pretending to be devastated.

He turned his back on me.

“No particular reason. I just don’t love you anymore.”

“Don’t worry about the children. I’ll take good care of them and send them to the best private

schools.”

“I’ll give you a generous settlement too. Enough for you to live comfortably for the rest of your

life.”

The offer sounded excellent.

Unfortunately, neither child belonged to him biologically.

Then again, raising his nephew and his own baby sister probably wouldn’t have been that much of a

burden.

“If you don’t object, my attorney can file the petition tomorrow.”

“What if I refuse?” I cut him off.

“Then we’ll settle it in court.”

“You haven’t worked since we got married. I’ve supported this entire household, including you.’

“I have the income, the house, and the resources. My attorneys will argue that the children are

better off with me, so think carefully. Cooperating will make things easier for everyone.”

His expression changed immediately when I refused.

He had been the one who asked me to stop working and devote myself to the household.

Now he was using that decision against me.

Men truly couldn’t be trusted.

“Then I’ll see you in court.”

For once, I stood my ground.

I no longer needed to tolerate him.

“Alison, aren’t you afraid of humiliating yourself in front of a judge?”

“I have a successful career. I have a united, supportive family, including my mother and brother.”

“What do you have? Your poor father in Alabama who can’t earn a cent and chases every woman in

town?”

“The difference is obvious. How do you think the judge will rule?”

“Anyone with eyes can tell which household offers a better environment for the children.”

“You’re not exactly in a position to fight me. It’s like a lamb going up against a wolf. You have

nothing.”

Afterward, Kevin went into Margaret’s room.

The two of them whispered until well after midnight.

The next morning, I found Margaret scrubbing the toilet.

“Mom, Kevin can’t have children anymore. From now on, the Harris family has to depend on the

two of us.”

“Once there’s a stepmother, the father becomes a stepfather too. We can’t let Nason and Lilly grow up under Amelia.”

I crouched beside Margaret and lowered my voice.

Margaret was close to me now, but Kevin was still her biological son.

I needed her to understand what was at stake.

“Kevin really can’t have children?”

“That’s right.” I nodded.

Margaret gritted her teeth.

“If anyone tries to take my Lilly, they’ll have to step over my dead body.”

She attacked the toilet so hard with the brush that the porcelain squeaked.

Several weeks later, the court held an emergency temporary custody hearing.

Margaret and Dylan both sat on Kevin’s side of the courtroom.

No one sat behind me.

My father was too busy repairing a fence for a widow he had recently met back home.

The blonde woman in the front row was Amelia Brown.

She looked even more beautiful than she had three years earlier.

“My wife, Alison, has never worked outside the home or earned a single dollar,” Kevin declared.

“She has no ability to support two children independently.”

“Over the past three years, I have transferred more than one million dollars to her. She squandered

every cent.”

“That demonstrates she cannot manage money responsibly or maintain a stable household.”

“The children should live with me while the divorce is pending. I can provide financial security, the

best education, and a loving family environment.”

“My mother and brother can confirm that my mother has cared for the children since birth. They

share a close bond.”

Kevin delivered his speech as though he were giving a keynote address.

Everyone in the courtroom began looking at me with judgment in their eyes.

The comments joined in.

[Three years and more than a million dollars? This side character is shameless. She’s been living like a queen on his money.]

[We never would’ve known if Kevin hadn’t exposed her. The author never gives us the side character’s point of view.]

[Of course not. She’s a side character. She only appears when Kevin is around.]

[If she truly loved those children, she’d give them to Kevin and Amelia. Alison can always have

more.]

Even the floating comments were cursing me.

“Your Honor, my husband committed adultery,” I said, covering my face as I cried.

“He abandoned me for three years while he lived overseas with his mistress. Now he has returned only to divorce me.”

“Do you have evidence of this alleged affair?” the judge asked.

“I have evidence.”

Margaret stood.
