No one spoke on the drive home.

Leo stared out the window, eyes red.

“Don’t worry, Mommy. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“If anyone tries, I’ll knock them down. Just like today.”

Derek caught something. His hands tightened on the wheel.

“Today?”

“Leo, did you hit Aunt Vivian today?”

Leo nodded proudly. Like he’d saved the day.

“I hit her. And threw a glass at her. And bit her.”

The car screeched to a stop.

Amanda’s head snapped forward. She cried out in pain.

“What the hell, Derek?”

“Leo. Who taught you to put your hands on someone?”

The sudden yell made everyone freeze.

Leo’s little shoulders shook. Tears rolled down his cheeks.

“I just… I didn’t want Mommy to cry anymore.”

“I didn’t want you guys fighting.”

Amanda pulled Leo into her arms. Rubbed his back.

“So you hit Aunt Vivian first?”

“And then she pushed you away?”

“And the glass on the floor… that was from you?”

Leo looked up at her serious face and told the truth.

“Yes.”

Amanda’s hand stopped moving.

She turned to look out the window. No one knew what she was thinking.

Maybe she saw my face. Tired but holding it together.

Maybe she saw the bandages on my hands. The slap mark on my cheek.

Or maybe she saw that pendant.

I bought it with my first paycheck.

To get a good one, I spent over thirty thousand dollars. My whole paycheck. Plus savings.

She cried and tried to drag me back to return it.

I held her hand and said, “You deserve this, Amanda.”

“Thank you. Thank you for being my friend.”

She fell apart, crying in my arms.

After that day, she never took that pendant off.

Twelve years. She never once took it off.

Her eyes got wet.

The car stopped in front of the house.
