Jason’s face changed. “Lily got hurt?”

I didn’t answer him. I walked straight into the ER.

Lily had a broken arm and a mild concussion.

Her little face was so pale. She looked completely drained, curled up against me.

The principal played the security footage on his phone.

Lily went up the slide first. When she saw Hailey behind her, she stopped to let her go.

But Hailey turned around and said something. Lily froze. Then Hailey pushed her from

behind, and Lily fell off the top of the tall slide.

I was burning with rage. I looked at Hailey coldly.

She shrank behind Emily, crying for her mommy.

Both of them had red eyes and hunched shoulders. They looked like they were the

victims here.

“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Harrington. I’ll pay for all of Lily’s medical bills.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears. She gave Jason a pitiful glance.

“I’ll talk to Hailey when we get home. Please don’t be angry with her. I’m sure she

didn’t mean to…”

Lily, who hadn’t said a word until now, spoke up. “She said Daddy doesn’t want me anymore. She said sooner or later he’ll kick me and Mommy out.”

Emily’s face went pale. She tried to stop Hailey from talking.

“Lily, you’re barely five years old. How do you even come up with lies like that?”

Then she added, dripping with implication, “Did someone put you up to this? You’ve always been such a… ah!”

My hand came down. “That’s for keeping your dirty mouth shut.”

Emily covered her cheek, tears streaming down her face. She looked so pitiful.

“Mrs. Harrison, I know how you feel about me… but Hailey’s just a little girl. Jason’s watched her grow up. He knows what kind of kid she is.”

laughed coldly and turned away. I didn’t want to watch her fake act anymore.

Lily started to say something else, but she glanced at Jason and stopped.

The teacher tried gently, “Lily, is there anything else you want to tell us?”

Lily shook her head and buried her face in my chest. Her voice was muffled.

“Nobody would believe me anyway. That’s how it’s always been.”

My hands were shaking. My heart ached.

Jason frowned. “Lily…”

I turned to him, and the anger I’d been holding back finally burst out.

“My daughter is the one lying in that hospital bed. If none of you care about her, fine, I

do!”

Jason’s face went pale. He stepped closer and reached for my arm. “Jess, that’s not what

I…”

I pulled Lily closer and stepped back without thinking.

He stopped mid-sentence. He stared at me in disbelief. “You don’t trust me?”

I really didn’t.

Not when it came to him, and not when it came to Emily.

When it came to the two little girls, he always favored Hailey.

If Hailey liked Lily’s birthday present, he gave it to her without caring that Lily was

crying.

If Hailey cut up her own dress and said Lily wouldn’t let her wear it, he threw away all of Lily’s dresses.

If Hailey tripped on the stairs and said Lily pushed her, he locked Lily in her room

without even asking.

One thing after another.

Honestly, that was part of why I divorced him the first time. I couldn’t stand to see Lily

get hurt anymore.

I turned my face away. “I don’t want my daughter going to the same preschool as a

child like that.”

“Either she leaves, or we do.”

Thud.

Emily dropped to her knees, pulling Hailey down with her. She sobbed, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Harrison. I know you don’t like me and Hailey.”

“But Hailey is already settled at this preschool. She loves it here.”

She looked at Jason, her face full of sorrow. “I promise I’ll teach Hailey not to bother Lily. Please, Mrs. Harrison, don’t make us leave.”

Jason turned his face away. Unlike before, he didn’t go to help her up.

Emily’s eyes went wide. This time, she was genuinely panicked. She grabbed Jason’s sleeve. “Jason…”

I was sick of the whole performance.

“Cut the act, Emily. I’m so tired of these pathetic games.”

“All you want is Jason. Fine. He’s just a guy. You can have him.”

I turned to Jason. “I want a divorce.”
