As a Sensitive, I Saw Another Woman in My Wolf Mate’s Heart Chapter 01

As a Sensitive, I Saw Another Woman in My Wolf Mate’s Heart Chapter 01

I had a secret.

I was Wolfless, but rare Sensitive blood ran through me.

With one touch, I could read the one true anchor buried deepest in any werewolf’s soul, and even in a human’s.

From the year that werewolf boy moved in next door when I was seven, his eyes had only ever held me.

The first time he held my hand that year, I closed my eyes and saw myself.

When he confessed to me at eighteen, I closed my eyes and still saw myself.

When he knelt at twenty-two and held the Alpha’s promise ring up to me, I closed my eyes, and it was still me.

On Full Moon night, when he bit the back of my neck and completed the Imprint, I closed my eyes.

My face was inside his heart, clear as the moon.

On the morning of our third mating anniversary, I straightened his collar for him.

My fingertips brushed his Adam’s apple, and out of habit, I closed my eyes for half a second.

This time, I saw two faces.

One was mine.

The other belonged to a woman I did not know.

That night, Silas Blackthorn’s moonstone communicator lit up.

On the screen was a message from that woman.

[Silas, thank you for staying with me today.]

Twenty-one years.

One hundred thousand touches.

For the first time, my gift was wrong.

For our anniversary, I had booked the restaurant a month in advance.

It was where we had our first date.

The red dress was the one he once said looked beautiful on me. The pearl earrings were the pair he had given me.

At six that evening, I had just changed and was putting on the earrings in front of the mirror.

His call came in.

“Emergency Pack duty. I can’t make it back tonight.”

His voice was rushed.

He hung up right after.

It was the first time he had ever hung up on me first.

I stared at myself in the mirror.

One earring was in place. The other dangled halfway beneath my ear, swaying.

Because I was Wolfless, my Mate Bond with him had always been weak.

But in that moment, the heartbeat that had always stayed steady gave a strange little ache.

It came from the Mate Bond, deep inside the soul.

Nova called and said, “Then I’ll spend it with you.”

She drove downstairs and took me out for steak.

The car stopped outside that restaurant. I was about to push the door open when my hand suddenly froze on the handle.

By the window, Silas was sitting there.

Across from him sat a woman around twenty-five or twenty-six. When she smiled, she had dimples.

Silas reached out and wiped cream from the corner of her mouth with his thumb.

He had done that for me since he was eighteen.

Nova saw it too and opened her mouth, ready to storm inside.

I held her hand down.

“Don’t.”

“Who is that woman?”

“I don’t know.”

At eleven that night, he came home with a bouquet of red roses, just like every anniversary before.

After his shower, he came out and hugged me from behind, resting his chin on top of my head.

“Raina, I’m sorry about today. I’ll make it up to you another day.”

I closed my eyes.

Two faces appeared, flashing back and forth.

Mine.

And that woman’s.

Half and half.

After twenty-one years, it was the first time I had seen someone else in his heart.

After he fell asleep, I checked his moonstone communicator.

The password was my birthday.

He had not changed it.

Lyra Wainwright’s chat was pinned at the top.

Their messages started half a year ago. Work updates slowly became everyday conversations. “Got it” slowly became “Good night.”

One message from her said:

[I feel awful today. I want something sweet.]

He replied:

[The dessert shop downstairs. I’ll bring you some.]

Another said:

[That restaurant you recommended last time? I went alone. It didn’t taste good. Come with me next time.]

The latest one was from tonight.

[Silas, thank you for staying with me today.]

I put down the moonstone communicator and lay back in bed.

He rolled over and instinctively pulled me into his arms, mumbling in his sleep.

I asked, “Who were you with today?”

He gave a vague hum in his dream and held me tighter.

“With the Elders.”

I did not ask again.

The Mate Bond seemed to have started tearing open a tiny crack.

The needle-like pain almost made me cry.

The next morning, before leaving, he kissed my forehead.

“Mate, something really came up yesterday. I’ll take you to the lake this weekend.” His smile looked exactly the same as before.

I looked at him for a while.

Then I said, “Okay.”

After he left, I folded the red dress neatly and placed it at the very bottom of my closet.

Nova called at noon and asked if I was okay.

The other end of the line was quiet for several seconds.

“Raina Ashworth, you’ve only had eyes for him since you were seven.”

“I know.”

“So what are you going to do now?”

I looked out the window.

The sky was blue, without a single cloud.

“Maybe he was only confused for a moment. He’ll change. We still have the Mate Bond, don’t we?”
