That ash pendant had been handcrafted by Dad after Mom’s miscarriage, back when grief had

nearly destroyed her.

Night after night, she woke screaming from nightmares about the child she’d lost.

And night after night, Dad was there.

He held her. He never lost patience.

Even with dark circles under his eyes, he never stopped.

He took that pendant up the mountain himself. On foot.

All tens of thousands of steps. He walked every single one.

He even stayed at the chapel, praying for the child they’d lost, day and night.

That was why Mom had finally found the strength to move on-why she’d forgiven his betrayal.

But now, Dad was using that same pendant to threaten her.

I forced my eyes open, every bone aching with pain.

All I saw was the last trace of light in Mom’s eyes being extinguished completely.

Her body swayed.

Her hoarse voice was so faint it barely stirred the air.

“Nathaniel… I regret saving you.”

Footsteps rushed toward the room from outside.

Nathaniel cut her off with an impatient sneer.

“You’re full of lies! Even now, you’re trying to steal what’s Fiona’s!”

The moment the words fell, he threw the pendant out the window.

Mom screamed in despair.

Nathaniel grabbed my throat and fixed Mom with an icy stare.

“You’d better think carefully about what you’re going to say later.”

I struggled, but all I caught was one last glimpse of Mom’s lifeless eyes-before he dragged me out.

In the next instant, a swarm of reporters flooded her room, cameras and microphones thrust

forward.

She sat there alone-surrounded, her face deathly pale before the cameras, her eyes terrifyingly

hollow.

The endless clicking of shutters. The mocking questions. The scornful laughter.

They all hit me like a blow.

The buzzing pain didn’t stop until Nathaniel shoved me into a car.

“Take her to the Whitmore Estate.”

He gave the order casually.

But through the window, I caught Fiona’s eyes-the viciousness there, the calculation, all of it

plain to see.

A wave of dread exploded inside me.

With the last shred of strength I had, I fought to shove the door open.

“I don’t want to stay in the car… Let me out!”

Nathaniel didn’t hesitate for even a second.

He pushed me back inside and slammed the door shut.

The car shot forward.

Just then, I heard the driver whisper-full of regret.

I watched in horror as the car slammed into a guardrail and flipped.

A few moments later, a wave of scorching heat swept over me.

And I fell into a warm embrace…

Meanwhile, Nathaniel drove Fiona back to the villa.

Looking at the delicate girl nestled against him, his mind drifted unexpectedly to Eliza’s eyes – stubborn, despairing.

His chest tightened for no reason.

“Nathaniel…”

Fiona leaned in for a kiss.

For the first time, he pushed her away.

He pulled out a document and handed it to her, a note of resignation in his voice.

“Sign it. I’ll give you the divorce settlement we agreed on.”

“After the baby’s born, they’ll still call you Mom.”

“Eliza kicked up a fuss, I know-but she’s been punished enough.”

The color drained completely from Fiona’s face.

Just then, the doorbell rang-frantic, insistent.

The door swung open-and a cane came crashing down on Nathaniel’s shoulder.

His face went slack before the shock could even settle in.

Then the man’s furious roar drained every last trace of color from it.

“You worthless bastard! Eliza is dead-did you even know?”
