He Changed My Major And I Changed My Entire Life Chapter 06

I spent two wonderful weeks in Australia before school started. My parents took me sightseeing along the coast. Waves, rocks, beaches — everything felt fresh and exciting.

The hot Australian sun burned away all the lingering pain and gloom of my twelve years with him. It cleared my head and washed away most of the bad memories. So when I saw a familiar face blocking my way on registration day, my mind went blank for a second.

Sean Blair stood in front of me, lips pressed together, not saying a word. The floating comments popped back up.

[Here we go! The classic make-or-break reconciliation moment! That stubborn hothead finally crossed oceans to win his girl over!]

[Joanie’s gonna soften up, go back to the States, and they’ll start their sweet college romance!]

I frowned. Sean clammed up tight. A heavy, tense silence hung thick between us.

My friend Sarah tugged my sleeve. “Do you know him? Should I call campus security?”

Sean’s face went pale. Back home, we’d been inseparable. No one ever asked who he was. I gave Sarah a reassuring look and shook my head.

“It’s fine. He’s a friend from back home.”

“Oh okay, good!” Sarah smiled and waved at Sean. “Make sure you wrap up your enrollment later; I’ll drop your paperwork off at the

admin desk for you.” She walked off, leaving just me and Sean.

His shoulders were tight. After a long silence, he spoke first. That was rare.

“Why did you leave without telling me?”

“We promised we’d go to Harvard together. Joanie, you broke our promise.”

I let out a bitter laugh. Even after everything, his first instinct was to blame me, not apologize. I looked up at him.

“We broke up, Sean. I don’t have to tell you what I do. You don’t get to decide where I go to school.”

“I’m being polite by not walking away right now. If that’s all you came to say, I have things to do.”

The comments exploded.

[Wait, this isn’t how this is supposed to go.]

[Why’s she so mad at him? They’re supposed to have a tearful hug and make up. Who changed the script?]

I ignored them and turned to leave. Sean grabbed my wrist.

“Wait, don’t walk away.”

His hand was hot against my skin. His eyes were slightly red. He squeezed tighter, like he was forcing himself to speak.

“I’m sorry. I had no right to snap at you like that that night; it’ll never happen again.”

He went quiet again, waiting for me to forgive him. I just looked at him. He hung his head lower, as if swallowing his pride to apologize was humiliating.

But I had apologized to him for twelve years.

[He looks so sad. This feels wrong. Sunny Joanie is being way too cold.]

[He’s always been bad with words. He’s trying his best. Forgive him already. Don’t let these two go their separate ways for good.]

I smiled bitterly. Everyone had told him what he did wrong. But he still thought I left just because he said a few mean things.

“It doesn’t matter anymore.”

“The problem was never your sharp tongue, Sean. It’s that you never respected my choices.”

“I’m not angry anymore. I’m not angry anymore. But I can’t believe I was dumb enough to let you log into my account.”

“And I’m not going to forgive you.”

“Thank you for coming all this way. Now we can really end things. You go back to Harvard. I’ll stay here in Australia.”

“Let’s just leave it at that.”
