“Vivian… please forgive us.” Julian hung his head, slapping himself hard.

“Vivian… I know I was wrong. Amelia tricked me. I shouldn’t have hurt you!” Leo approached, his voice hoarse, pained.

I said nothing, barely recalling them.

Mom stepped forward, shielding me, and swung her arms in wide arcs, slapping the two men soundly.

“Smack! Smack!”

The force nearly sent the two grown men reeling.

“You hurt Vivian like that?!” Mom’s eyes shone with anger and tears. “How dare you harm my baby!”

She handed her bag to Dad, took off her heels, and slammed them toward the two men.

Richard and Margaret staggered back, startled.

Julian and Leo remained silent, repeatedly apologizing.

After a few minutes, Mom, breathing heavily, patted her chest.

“Vivian… let’s go!”

“Today, you start school. We haven’t even toured the campus yet!”

“Don’t let disgusting people ruin our day!”

She gently took my hand, softly patting my back.

“Vivian… don’t be afraid.”

“I will always be behind you. No one will ever hurt you again!”

Mom smiled and gave me a reassuring squeeze on the arm as she led me into the school.

Behind us, the Sinclair family’s choked apologies echoed through the hall.

I felt nothing.
