I leaned forward slightly, my voice still calm. “Did Savannah cry to the media and say she only wants me to accept her? That she didn’t want me to be sad, and maybe she shouldn’t have come into this family?”

Ethan’s face told me I was right.

“And then Father told the cameras I just need a little time to adjust? That I’ve always been sensitive. Correct?”

Ethan opened his mouth, but no words came out.

I picked up my bag and stood.

“Savannah is very good at this. She can always turn everyone into a supporting character in her story, and I’m usually cast as the unlikable older sister.”

“Eliza, it isn’t like that…”

“I don’t blame you.” I looked at him. There was no hatred in me, only a vast distance. “You’re protecting a brand. I get it.”

I turned and walked out.

“Go protect your family brand, Ethan. Just don’t drag me back into it.”

After I left the café, my life became much simpler.

Classes, the library, and handling the credits and paperwork for my transfer to the University of Oregon.

Leo became the only person I truly interacted with. If I had to choose one ally, it was him.
