He Gave Her a Wedding, So I Named My Gown Farewell Chapter 06

“Welcome to Milan. Our great designer has finally given up that miserable relationship and decided to return to the world.”

“The standards of the entire design industry are about to rise again.”

Depp, the atelier director sitting in the front seat, teased me.

“Depp, you’re exaggerating.”

“I found you an apartment. The school is contacted too. You’ll register next week.”

As we chatted, the car pulled up below an apartment building.

After everything was settled and Depp left, I started organizing the place.

This time, I was organizing a home that belonged only to me.

No loud game chat ringing in my ears.

No other woman’s intimate clothing scattered everywhere.

No one else coming and going whenever they pleased.

All I had was freedom.

A kind of ease I hadn’t felt in years.

On my second evening in Milan, an unknown number called my phone.

It looked a little familiar.

I could guess Adrian was probably behind it.

After thinking for a moment, I answered.

“Hello? Elena? It’s me, Mike. You remember me, right?”

Mike was another childhood friend of Adrian and Joanna.

“I remember. What is it?”

The other end paused for a few seconds.

Then I heard rustling.

They had probably put me on speaker.

“Adrian asked me to make this call. We all heard what happened between you two, and I’m not calling to defend him. What he and Joanna did this time was way out of line. We’ve all told him that.”

“But Elena, he really knows he messed up this time. He’s been in terrible shape for the past two days. He keeps muttering to himself like he’s falling apart. For my sake, can you give him a chance to say a few words?”

I took a deep breath and let it out heavily.

Then I gave a quiet, “Okay.”

I knew this was between Adrian and me.

If I didn’t face it directly, he would keep asking people to contact me.

I might as well end it once and for all.

Soon, a weak voice came through the phone, thick with tears.

“Elena, I’m sorry. Do you really not want me anymore? I…”

“Adrian Shaw.”

I cut him off.

“Don’t act pitiful. We’re adults. Say what you need to say.”

The other end went quiet for a few seconds before he spoke.

“Elena, I’ve thought a lot these past two days. I know I was unbelievably wrong. I got too comfortable believing you would never leave me, and I ignored how much I loved you.”

“Love? Adrian, ask yourself honestly. Does that word have any weight when it comes to me? Seven years, and I couldn’t even get one sentence from you saying you’d marry me. But a promise Joanna made with you when you were seven, you kept it in your reminders.”

“I thought you didn’t mind that Joanna and I grew up together.”

“What I minded wasn’t that you grew up together. It was that she was always more important than me.”

“That’s not true. How could she be more important than you?”

Adrian’s voice turned anxious.

“Isn’t it true? In our home, Joanna could come and go whenever she wanted. Her things were everywhere.”

“When I wanted soup, you said you had no time. When she wanted to check out a restaurant, you were free whenever.”

“When my stomach hurt and I needed medicine, you forgot again and again and kept delaying it, just so you could stay with her and ride amusement park rides.”

“Even the engagement dinner we had already set with my family had to step aside for Joanna’s birthday.”

“You said you took care of her, tolerated her, spoiled her because she would always be a little girl in your heart. What about me, Adrian? I’m only one year older than her!”

The more I spoke, the more emotional I became.

By the end, my voice had started to break.

This time, I wasn’t crying for him.

I was crying for how little my love had been worth.

“You told me to take ibuprofen if it hurt too much. Adrian, the ibuprofen at home was expired.”

“My love for you expired too.”

Adrian’s sobs came through the phone.

“Elena… I’m sorry.”

“Stop looking for me.”

I hung up and wiped away the tears on my face.

His late realization and apology had come too late.

Let losing me teach him how to cherish someone.

Let it teach him regret.
