His Dead Lover Came Back I Asked for Overtime Pay Chapter 04

The air was so still you could hear a pin drop.

The playboy’s eyes went wide, his jaw dropping as his gaze darted between me and Zachary, like he’d just heard some earth-shattering scandal.

The suspicion on Lynn’s face vanished, replaced by embarrassment and sudden understanding.

She looked at me with less hostility and something more complicated in her eyes.

Zachary had been leaning back lazily, still looking nonchalant, but I noticed the knuckles gripping his wine glass were white.

He was surprised — surprised that his brother actually cared so much about me.

Since the boss had set the stage, as a top-tier employee, I had to deliver an Oscar-worthy performance.

I lowered my lashes, let a hint of tears well up, and gently bit my lower lip, striking a tragic, beautiful pose of “loving the wrong person yet having to endure it.”

“Zachary… no, Mr. Zachary.” My voice trembled, heavy with heartbreak. “

Since you still have business with your friends, I’ll head home. I’ll explain things to your brother myself.”

Without waiting for him to respond, I turned decisively, straightened my back, and quickly followed the waiter out.

At the corner, I glanced back. Zachary was still sitting there, but he wasn’t looking at his long-lost love — he was staring in the direction I’d left, his brow furrowed.

Ha. Men.

I sneered to myself.

Trying to have it both ways would cost extra on my contract.

Settling into the black Maybach Ethan had arranged, I let out a long sigh of relief. Perfect exit.

No crying, no screaming, no threats.

I’d protected Zachary’s reputation and made a clean break. That severance was mine.

The car cruised across the Seattle Bridge.

I was planning whether to go to Iceland for the Northern Lights or the Maldives to relax when my phone buzzed. The screen showed two words: Mr. Collins.

I immediately sat up straight, cleared my throat, and answered. “Good evening, Mr. Collins.”

“How did it go?” Ethan’s voice came through, cool and crisp as broken ice.

I reported honestly.

“Very smoothly, Mr. Collins. To distance himself from me in front of Miss Moore, Mr. Zachary said I was your… little pet. Thanks to your arrangement, Miss Moore completely believed it.”

Silence for a full thirty seconds.

I’d started to worry the call had dropped when Ethan finally spoke, a hint of mockery in his voice.

“My little pet?”

I quickly explained, “Those were just words said in the heat of the moment. I certainly didn’t mean to offend you. If you think it’s inappropriate, I can go clear things up tomorrow.”

“No need,” Ethan interrupted, his tone back to neutral. “Since he said it, you might as well keep that cover for now.”

I was taken aback.

What did he mean?

Wasn’t my job over?

“Mr. Collins, what do you mean…”

“Exactly what it says,” he said calmly.

“Move out of his penthouse tomorrow. I’ll send someone to pick you up.”

The line went dead.

I held my phone, listening to the busy signal, with a bad feeling creeping in.
