“Genevieve.” Preston’s voice was hoarse. “Do you remember this charm?”

Genevieve looked up at him, her eyes wide with just the right amount of confusion.

“What charm?”

Preston shoved the phone in front of her.

In the photo, the pendant was caked with blood and mud.

Genevieve glanced at it and shook her head gently.

“I don’t think so. Preston, what’s wrong? You look terrible.”

“I made this,” Preston said. “I gave one to Laney years ago and kept one for myself. But why would it be there?”

Genevieve’s expression stiffened for a fraction of a second. Then she immediately pressed a hand to her forehead, her voice growing weak.

“Preston… my head hurts. After the accident, there are so many things I can’t remember…”

Tears welled in her eyes, making her look fragile and pitiful.

In the past, the sight of her tears would have been enough to make him drop the subject.

But today, that charm was like a thorn in his mind, and he couldn’t let it go.

“You don’t remember?” He stared at her, his gaze slowly hardening. “Then do you remember who pulled me out of the lake all those years ago?”

Genevieve froze, and tears began to stream down her face.

“Preston, why are you asking me this all of a sudden? Are you accusing me of something? All because of a charm?”

She sobbed, her shoulders shaking.

Preston stared at her for several long seconds. In the end, his resolve softened.

He gestured for a server.

“Please see Miss Bennett home.”
