Silenced Omega Chapter 18

Silenced Omega Chapter 18

The hunter’s eyes went wide. A neat, bloody hole appeared in the center of his forehead, and he collapsed.

Archer stood behind him, the muzzle of his gun still smoking.

His eyes had turned completely gold.

The other two hunters lay dead a few feet away.

Laney’s hand went slack, and the gun fell to the ground.

“You…”

“I told you not to come out,” Archer said, his voice cold.

He quickly checked the bodies and began cleaning up the scene, his movements so practiced it was clear this wasn’t his first time.

Laney watched him, and a memory surfaced.

She touched her neck.

A thin chain hung there, with a small, moonstone charm carved with an intricate pattern.

Years ago, Preston had given it to her. He’d made two, he said, and kept the other for himself.

She had never thrown it away.

Laney took off the necklace, stared at it for a few seconds, then tossed the charm into the mud next to the dead hunter’s body.

Archer saw what she did and frowned.

“You want to lead them to Preston?”

Laney nodded and mouthed the words.

“He deserves it.”

Archer said nothing more.

He quickly finished wiping their tracks and lifted her onto his back.

“Let’s go. The police will be here soon.”

Not long after they disappeared into the trees, the sound of sirens echoed in the distance.

At that moment, Preston was having dinner with Genevieve at a three-Michelin-star restaurant in Manhattan.

His phone vibrated.

It was a text from his subordinate. The mission had failed.

Genevieve asked gently, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Preston smiled. “A small issue at work.”

He replied to the text.

“Keep searching. Bring them back.”

Half an hour later, an unfamiliar number called.

Preston answered, frowning.

“Who is this?”

“Mr. Doyle? This is the New York State Police. We’ve found three bodies by the river, and an item belonging to you was left at the scene. We need you to come in and assist with the investigation.”

Preston’s expression darkened.

“What item?”

The officer on the other end sent him a photograph.

Preston opened it and zoomed in.

A few seconds later, the wineglass in his hand slipped from his fingers and shattered on the floor.

In the photo, a bloodstained charm lay in the mud.

The letter ‘P’ carved into it was perfectly clear.

He recognized it.

He had made that charm himself.

How did Laney have it? And why was it at a murder scene?
