The graduation countdown on the board ticked down.

Between classes, more students asked me for help.

My desk and Hunter’s were always crowded.

Everyone studied hard. Kat faded into the background, lifeless.

During a quiz, Kat saw my score and screamed, tearing her paper into pieces.

“Jules! What dirty tricks did you pull?” Kat snarled.

I smiled at her jealous, twisted face. “You want to know?”

Kat’s eyes lit up, hungry for the secret.

I leaned close to her ear. “The secret is… use your brain.”

“Bitch!”

Kat grabbed my collar and shoved me against the wall. I saw Hunter sprinting toward us.

“Stop!” Hunter pulled her off. “What are you doing?”

“What do you think I’m doing? I’m exposing this liar! You’re here too, so don’t you want to know how she

went from last place all the way to first?”

Hunter hesitated. “It doesn’t matter.”

“Doesn’t matter? You’re defending her now? Stay away from her before she ruins you!”

Kat glared at me and stormed off.

“Why didn’t you fight back?” Hunter asked suddenly.

“It doesn’t matter.”

I learned one thing in this life: emotional pain cuts deeper than physical. And this wasn’t nearly enough.

Days before graduation, the school held a trivia contest. The person with the most points won. Harder

questions were worth more.

Early questions were easy. Later ones stumped most students. There were no points for late answers.

Hunter, Kat, and I made it to the end. Kat struggled, barely finishing in time.

With three questions left, Kat folded early. I answered every question just before Hunter.

I finished with a perfect score. Hunter’s last answer was late.

I became famous across the school. Underclassmen begged for my notes.

“That’s Jules! She used to be dead last!”

“She’s a legend. She intentionally avoided correct answers before, and now she’s blowing everyone out of the

water.”

“First person ever with a perfect score!”

Rumors spread like wildfire.

Weirdly enough, Kat started being nice to me.

School let out for break. Teachers told us to relax before the graduation.

The night before graduation, Kat called. “Jules, big test tomorrow. Let’s grab dinner. Hunter’s coming too.”

“Sure.”

I had a bad feeling. I invited Rue along.

“Rue, don’t eat or drink anything they give us. Bring your own water.”

“Got it.”
