Revenge Is the Best Wedding Gift Chapter 03

It had just rained heavily outside—Seattle weather was always this awful.

I landed right in a puddle of mud by the roadside. The pavement was slippery; the more I struggled to get up, the worse I fell.

Rafe just sat quietly in his Range Rover, watching me expressionlessly.

“Lavinia, do you see reality clearly now?”

Seeing me look up at him, he let out a cold laugh.

“Without my charity, you can’t even manage to stand up by yourself. If you really divorced me, where else could you crawl off to?”

Without waiting for my answer, the car door slammed shut. The Range Rover shot away from beside me like an arrow, splashing muddy water all over my face.

When my vision fell into darkness, memories of my past with Rafe flashed through my mind like a movie reel.

Right after divorcing Nicholas, unable to bear the betrayal, I developed severe clinical depression.

I would uncontrollably cut myself with eyebrow razors. Every time Rafe found me with a cut, he would make two cuts on himself.

I had insomnia night after night. Rafe simply had the villa’s roof opened up, replaced with a huge glass skylight, and held me all night while we counted stars.

I couldn’t eat due to loss of appetite, so he went hungry with me.

After a torturous year like this, my condition finally improved and I began to trust him again.

The day he confessed, he knelt on one knee and swore he would never betray me in this lifetime, that he would be my safe harbor forever.

I was stupid enough to believe him.

Now, just one year later, Rafe’s vows had become the cheapest trash.

My thoughts gradually focused. I wiped the mud from my eyes with the back of my hand and managed to stand up by gripping a fire hydrant.

My clumsy, disheveled appearance drew pointing and staring from passersby.

Ashamed and afraid, I frantically waved for a yellow taxi by the roadside.

Finally, a cab driver who didn’t mind me dirtying his back seat agreed to take me, but required me to pay the fare upfront plus an extra fifty dollars for cleaning.

I agreed repeatedly.

But when I tried to swipe my credit card, the machine showed my account had been frozen—I couldn’t even charge a single cent.

The driver kicked me out, and the sky opened up with torrential rain again.

The heavy raindrops pelted my body, cold and painful.

I don’t know how long I walked in the rain before finally making it back on foot to the townhouse I shared with Rafe.

Pushing open the front door, my brain went completely blank.

On the oak floor of the entryway, red-soled high heels and men’s dress shoes were scattered together in a mess, with black lace lingerie and an Armani custom suit jacket strewn everywhere.

By the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, Rafe was holding Victoria in a passionate kiss.

For a moment, that nauseating scene from five years ago perfectly overlapped with what I was seeing now.

I couldn’t control myself and let out a piercing shriek, my hands and legs shaking wildly.

The scream interrupted the two people who were making out.

Rafe frowned irritably: “What are you screaming about? It’s not like this is your first time seeing this.”

Victoria let out an undisguised mocking laugh: “Long time no see, Lavinia. I was wrong on the phone earlier—Rafe is much better in bed than your ex-husband.”

Her words greatly pleased Rafe.

“You have good taste.”

Rafe smiled smugly and walked toward me.

But the closer he got, the more violently I shook.

Finally, when he tried to touch me, I bent over sharply and started dry heaving uncontrollably.

Dimly, I felt Rafe’s figure stiffen for a moment.

After a while, his sinister voice reached my ears: “Lavinia, do you find me disgusting?”
