He Turned My Love Into a Grave Chapter 06

He found Elara sitting on the sofa, her face ashen, her gown crumpled and stained with splashes of red wine.

He frowned. His expression darkened. He draped his suit jacket around her shoulders.

“Let’s go home. I’ll make you some hangover soup. No more acting out.”

His tenderness was poison wrapped in sugar.

By the time Elara felt the pain, she’d already swallowed it. It had eaten through her insides.

Tears burning in her eyes, she shoved him away and forced herself to her feet.

She took one step. Her legs buckled. She hit the floor.

Silas grabbed her wrist, hard. His patience snapped. “Still fighting me? Elara, have you learned nothing? Is it really that hard to just listen, just once?”

The bitter despair she’d been choking down finally exploded out of her in a flood of tears.

He had no idea. This one time she’d been obedient.

How brutal it had been.

And what she’d paid for it.

Resentment and disappointment sank into her bones.

“We’re finished, Silas.”

She hauled herself up and walked out, step by agonizing step.

The sight of her retreating back hit him like a needle through the chest.

Something between them was draining away, fast.

When he got back to the villa, Elara had already moved into the guest bedroom. Her door was locked.

He knocked. All he heard was the sound of running water.

Downstairs, he downed glass after glass of water. His throat stayed dry.

He called his assistant. “After I left the room tonight, did something happen to Elara? Did she drink too much?”

A pause on the line. Then, firm and steady. “She just had a few extra glasses. You told us to scare her a little, nothing more. That’s all that happened.”

Silas lowered his gaze. He made a soft sound of acknowledgment and hung up.

What he didn’t know was that his personal assistant had eaten something bad at the banquet and abandoned Elara to run to the bathroom.

When she was being violated, he wasn’t anywhere near that room.

Days passed. Elara became someone else.

At breakfast, she sat at the opposite end of the table, as far from Silas as possible.

The Voss family dinners—she claimed illness and stopped showing up.

Even the roses in the back garden that Silas loved—she never tended them anymore.

Then, one day, after visiting her father, Elara walked past a shopping center. A rusted billboard broke loose and crashed down on her.

She got herself to the hospital alone, gripping her bleeding arm, waiting for stitches.

Silas stormed in, his presence a dark cloud. He seized her by the arm. “You got hurt. Why didn’t you call me?”

She flinched back like he was a predator. Her voice was flat, distant. “It’s nothing. A scratch.”

Before Silas could answer, a voice around the corner called out. “Silas, I’m all done with my checkup.”

He was here with Lila. For her appointment.

Elara ducked her head and moved past them both, walking straight past Silas and his attempt at comfort.

A few minutes later, while Silas waited at the pharmacy, Lila slipped into the exam room Elara had just left.

“Doctor, that woman who was just in here—she’s a friend of mine. What happened to her?”

The doctor glanced carelessly at the chart. “She’s pregnant.”

Elara got home and found a message waiting from Noelle. [Elara, everything’s set. Three days from now. They’ll pick you up at the Coastal Docks.]

The hope that surged through her made her fingers tremble.

The housekeeper saw her and froze in horror. “Mrs. Voss—what happened? Your injuries… Mr. Voss will be so worried.”

Elara laughed, her eyes empty. “No. He won’t. Soon, I won’t be Mrs. Voss anymore. I’m leaving this place forever.”

The words barely left her mouth before a shadow fell over her.

“Sweetheart, you’re leaving?”
