Grace was not impressed.

The amnesia had apparently made her more demanding. She threw everything she could lift at him, tears spilling down her cheeks. “You couldn’t even keep our marriage certificate safe. You don’t love me. I want a divorce.”

The word hit Ethan like a punch.

He dropped to his knees. “It’s my fault. But we can get new ones. I’ll keep the new ones safe. I swear. Please. Just give me another chance.”

After enough begging, after he transferred an obscene amount of money into her account without her even asking, Grace finally agreed.

On the day she was discharged, they went to get new licenses.

When they got in the car, Grace sat in the back.

Ethan turned around, confused. “Babe, you get carsick in the back, remember?”

She stared out the window. “I don’t want to sit up front. I don’t like the idea of anyone else being in that seat. Makes me sick.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened, but he forced a smile. “No one’s ever sat there. But if it bothers you that much, I’ll get a new car.”

Grace didn’t answer.

They got the new licenses quickly enough. But no sooner were they in hand than Grace walked straight to the divorce counter.

“I want a divorce. Getting new licenses isn’t enough. We need to do this over.”

Ethan tried to protest.

But Grace had mastered the art of being impossible.

When she turned those red-rimmed eyes on him and said, “Unless you’re worried you won’t marry me again. Is that it? Is that the kind of man you are?”

Ethan broke. “Of course not. Fine. Divorce. Then we’ll do it again.”

People passing by saw a bratty wife and a husband who gave her whatever she wanted.

Grace didn’t correct them. Ethan played along. “What can I say? She’s spoiled. And I spoil her.”

He was so caught up in the relief of having her back that he didn’t see the way her mouth curved when she thought he wasn’t looking.

On the drive home, they set a new wedding date. One month away.
