I couldn’t answer.

I was just too exhausted.

But my reaction got to him. He grabbed me by the collar and let out a laugh that was more fury than humor. “You’re making me do this, Grace. I was going to let tonight be the end of it. But now? Now I need you to feel every bit of what I went through.”

He let go of me and motioned Vanessa over.

“The wedding,” he said. “You’re the bride.”

Vanessa’s face lit up as she threw herself into his arms. “Wait, really? Then I want Grace as my maid of honor. Five years ago, I was hers. Only fair she returns the favor.”

“Perfect,” Ethan said, his eyes fixed on me, each word cutting like a blade. “She can walk the aisle, hand us the rings.”

I looked up at him, disbelief choking me.

I wanted to say no, but my throat was too tight. All I could do was shake my head.

Ethan’s smile turned cruel. “Hurts, doesn’t it? Good. Because five years ago, when you married someone else, that’s exactly how I felt.”

I stared at his face, twisted with resentment.

And then, suddenly, I got it.

He didn’t want fairness.

He wanted me to suffer the same way he’d suffered. The more it hurt, the better.

I pressed my hand against my chest, the ache there already going numb and forced the corner of my mouth up. “No.”

“I’m not hurting, Ethan. I’m just disgusted.”

Those words set him off.

He let go of Vanessa and grabbed me, dragging me toward the stairs.

I fought him, but he was too strong.

He paused outside the master bedroom, then kicked open the door to the room next to it and shoved me inside.

I lunged for the door as it swung shut. “Let me out!”

Too late.

His voice came through the door, flat and cold. “Disgusted, huh? You haven’t seen anything yet.”

“Vanessa. Come upstairs.”

I stood there frozen, ice running through my veins.
