A few people in the crowd couldn’t hold back their laughter.

Victoria’s expression shifted.

Chloe lunged forward, trying to grab my menu board.

She was fast, but I was faster.

I pinned the menu down with one hand and held up the card reader with the other.

“You break it, you buy it.”

“Who do you think you’re scaring?” Chloe shrieked. “It’s a dumpy little stand. My brother could shut you down with a single word.”

I looked at Julian.

He’d been standing in the back the whole time, stone-faced, without saying a word.

I was suddenly reminded of three years ago.

The first time I had dinner at Hollander’s family home, Victoria complained that I hadn’t used serving utensils to pick up food for the elders.

I explained that I hadn’t touched the food, just nudged it to the edge of the communal plate.

In front of all the relatives, Chloe sneered, “People from small towns always have small-town manners.”

I looked at Julian then, too.

He had been just as silent.

When we got home, he’d said, “That’s just how my mom is. Don’t take it personally.”

I’d cried in the bathroom until my eyes were swollen that night.

And the next day, I still had to go make his mother her favorite homemade soup.

People are strange.

The thorns that used to hurt so much I couldn’t sleep—now, they just felt ridiculous.

I lifted my chin. “Julian, your sister says you can shut me down with a single word.”

“Are you going to do it?”

Everyone turned to him.

Chloe looked like she’d found her backup. “Julian, say something!”

Victoria gave me a cold glare. “Julian, get this handled.”

Julian finally moved.

He walked up to the stand and placed his phone next to my POS terminal.

“Ten combos.”

Chloe froze. “Julian?”

Even Victoria’s face stiffened.

I stared at him. “Are you done yet?”

Julian didn’t look at them. His eyes were locked on me.

“I lost one of the cards from yesterday.”

I thought I’d misheard him. “What?”

“I want to replace it.”

Chloe’s voice cracked. “Julian, are you insane? She’s insulting you!”

Julian turned his head toward her.

The look wasn’t heavy, but it made her shut her mouth instantly.

“She’s not wrong.”

The moment those words dropped, the crowd went wild.

Someone pulled out a phone to record.

Someone whispered, “The ex-husband is officially confessing.”

But I couldn’t laugh.

Julian was acting too strangely.

So strange it sent a chill down my spine.

Victoria tried to suppress her rage. “Julian, do you have any idea what you’re saying?”

“I do.”

He picked up a blank card and placed it in front of me.

“Whatever Sadie writes, I’ll accept it.”
