I had just stepped out of the Fairview Museum of Art and History when the comments started

I didn’t respond to the playful comments; I just smiled.

Three years ago, right before that car exploded, it was these comments that had given me a way to

escape.

After that, they became my friends, my family.

They warned me about danger. They comforted me when I was sad. They helped me find a home in

this unfamiliar country.

[Okay, we saw the museum. It’s getting dark. Time to go home!]

[Yeah, you have a piano recital tomorrow. Get some rest!]

I looked at the darkening sky, agreed with the comments, and called a cab.

The comments scrolled by as I watched, talking about everyday things, complaining about work. I leaned back, relaxed, and looked out the window at the beautiful Fairview night.

Half an hour later, the cab pulled up to my apartment building.

The sun had fully set by the time I got out.

The lights outside the building had been broken for days. The landlord hadn’t replaced them yet,

and they flickered on and off, which was kind of creepy.

I was about to walk inside when the comments cleared out completely and all started saying the

same thing.

[Honey, watch out behind you! Run!]

My body moved faster than my brain. I ran, but it was too late.

Someone grabbed me and pulled me onto their lap. A familiar yet strange pair of arms wrapped

around me.
