A year ago, my professor had urged me to move to Fairview to pursue my career, but I stayed for Benjamin.

Now that I had seen his true colors, I could use this as a chance to cut ties with him for good.

As I was rushing out the door with my suitcase, I ran into Benjamin and Jessica coming back.

He frowned when he saw my suitcase. “What are you doing? Where are you going?”

My heart skipped a beat, but I kept my voice steady. “You told me to get out. I’m doing exactly that. Isn’t that what you want?”

Benjamin opened his mouth to say something, but Jessica cut in. “Emily, you don’t really think this ‘playing hard to get’ act is going to work on Ben, do you?”

“Don’t waste your time. Ben doesn’t like you. He’ll be glad to see you go.”

Hearing that, Benjamin relaxed his brow and played along. “Jessica’s right. That doesn’t work on me. It’s better if you move out.”

“But think carefully. Once you leave, don’t expect to come back. This isn’t a place where you can come and go as you please.”

I laughed coldly. “Don’t worry. After I leave, I’d rather die than set foot in here again.”

Without looking back, I turned and walked away.

As I was waiting outside for a cab, Benjamin pulled up in his car. He gave me a sideways glance. “Get in. I’ll give you a ride. Don’t say I never did anything for you.”

I was about to refuse but then changed my mind, suddenly understanding why he insisted on driving me. Without another word, I got in the back seat.

“Grandview Hotel,” I said flatly.

I saw Benjamin’s eyes move away from the rearview mirror, the suspicion in them disappeared.

The car drove smoothly toward the hotel, one more turn and I would be there.

I was just starting to relax, ready to unbuckle my seatbelt, when a huge truck came out of nowhere and slammed into us.

The world spun. The car flipped over.

Pain exploded through my entire body. I tried to get up, but my limbs were pinned under the wreckage.

Benjamin kicked his door open and crawled out, then he rushed to the back door and pulled it open. When he saw me, he let out a breath of relief and reached for me as if to pull me out.

Tears filled my eyes as I reached back.

Then Jessica screamed from the front seat. “Ben! My leg is stuck! It hurts so much!”

Benjamin hesitated.

“Ben, please help me! You promised you would be good to me for these three months, remember?”

The hesitation in Benjamin’s eyes disappeared.

“Hold on. Someone else will help you,” he said it quickly.

I watched in disbelief as he left me there and ran back to the front seat. He pulled Jessica out of the car and carried her away without looking back.

Smoke was filling the car, and the smell of gasoline got stronger.

I struggled with everything I had, but my right hand and left foot were stuck in the twisted metal, and I couldn’t move.

I heard a crackle, and then fire.

The flames grew bigger and bigger, and I closed my eyes in despair.

Boom! A massive explosion.

Benjamin spun around and looked back at the burning car. For some reason, he felt like something was missing inside him.
