My procedure got rewritten anyway.

Adrian and my attending physician were old friends. He’d called in a favor. Torched my entire timeline without asking.

The attending physician gave me a knowing smile, like I was a child throwing a tantrum.

“Don’t be so hard on him, okay? Dr. Whitmore told me everything. You insisted on doing the surgery yourself because you were mad at him. Simple as that.”

“He really does care about you. He’s slammed at work, but he still cleared his schedule to be here for a minor procedure.”

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

What was there to say?

Exhausted. That was it.

According to my plan.

Surgery today. Rest tonight.

Fly to the new city tomorrow.

Onboarding at the new company the day after.

Now?

Adrian had torched all of it. Without a word to me.

I called his number.

Evelyn picked up.

“Adrian’s exhausted. He just fell asleep. I can pass along a message.”

Her voice hushed to a whisper, laced with apology.

“Oh—wait, were you supposed to have your surgery today? Oh my god, I’m so sorry—I don’t think Adrian can make it.”

She paused.

Then she hurried to add, like she was terrified I’d get the wrong idea—

“Claire, please don’t misunderstand—”

I killed the call.

One more word from her and I’d hear the same script.

Minutes later.

Evelyn’s Instagram story flashed up.

“It feels so good to be protected. I have the best brother in the world!”

The photo showed a room at Grandview.

Adrian slumped in a chair by the window. Arms crossed. Eyes closed.

Dark hollows carved into the skin beneath his lids.

He looked like he’d stayed up the whole night. By her bedside.

I stared at the screen.

Blocked Adrian.

Blocked Evelyn.

Then I opened my laptop and booked a consultation at Riverdale Medical Center.

Different city. Different hospital.

Minor procedure. No overnight stay needed.

If Riverdale Medical Center couldn’t follow my schedule.

I’d find one that could.
