You Want Me Back? Sorry, Request Rejected Chapter 29

While she waited for Jordan to change his clothes, Elise took the chance to check her phone. She saw that Calvin had left her a couple of messages not long ago.

Calvin: “Come back to the marital home, Elise. We need to talk.”

Calvin: “It’s about the agreement. My offer isn’t permanent.”

Elise’s nails pressed so hard into her phone that her fingertips turned white. So, he’d received the divorce papers. Thank goodness they hadn’t gone missing.

She sighed. After a long moment of hesitation, she waited until Jordan and Isabel had finished changing and came back out before apologizing and taking her leave.

“I’m sorry about this. Next time, it’s my treat.”

“Pretty lady, is it something super important?” Isabel tugged pitifully at the hem of Elise’s shirt.

“Yeah, it is,” Elise said, gently stroking her soft cheek. Then, she turned to Jordan and bit her lip. “I need to go, Mr. Steele. I’ll figure something out about the surgery as soon as I can.”

Jordan lowered his gaze to the file in his hands, the light glinting off his glasses with an icy sheen that warned people to keep their distance. He didn’t say a single word, not even as she walked away.

Keith watched this all play out and silently thought that this was bad. At this rate, everyone at the company would be working until the cows came home.

Elise quickly made her way back to Emerald Hills.

“Mrs. Fulton.”

When she stepped inside, David and a few of the household staff immediately greeted her. They were in the middle of picking up jigsaw pieces and building blocks scattered all over the living room floor.

Back when Elise lived there, she always made the twins clean up their own toys. It was rare to see the place looking like a war zone.

The house staff really missed the days when she was around. She doted on the twins, too, but she never spoiled them the way Sabrina did, with no boundaries at all.

Elise gave them a cool nod. As she headed deeper into the house, she was a little surprised not to see the twins or Sabrina anywhere. When she was upstairs, she went straight to the study and knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

Elise entered and got straight to the point. “Have you finished looking over the agreement? Is there anything you want to add?”

“Are you in that much of a hurry?” Calvin’s pen paused over the signature line. “I think we should sit down and talk this through. Our family shouldn’t be the way it is now.”

Elise cut him off, her tone calm and level. “Calvin, you’ve never loved me, have you? If it hadn’t been for that accident that night, we never would’ve gotten married.”

She no longer yearned for a fake happy ending in which she got a so-called blissful family. All she wanted now was to walk away free.

Calvin studied her, realizing that maybe he had never really understood her at all. Still, it wasn’t too late. He had plenty of time.

He set down his pen, his expression turning serious. “I think there’s room for discussion on the first and fourth terms.”

Elise mentally went through the divorce agreement. The first term was that she would keep the two properties in Azure Bay and the Southend area. One was the house her parents had owned before Gregory secretly sold it off. Calvin had ended up buying it.

The other was the apartment she and Calvin had lived in before they got married. She didn’t want anything else. If she was being honest with herself, she really wasn’t asking for much.

The fourth term stated that she would voluntarily give up custody of both children, but she would come visit them once a month on schedule. She genuinely didn’t see how that was excessive.

“You think it’s too much?” Elise frowned.

“Yeah. I don’t have the time or energy to keep running back and forth. You’re asking for too much in the first term.” Calvin’s gaze lingered on her cheek, which was no longer swollen but still slightly red. There was a fragile kind of beauty to it.

He tugged at his tie, then added darkly, “As for the fourth term… Are you sure you can really handle it?”

Elise hadn’t expected him to be this shameless. Yes, the apartment was closer to his office, but he’d basically never set foot in it again after they got married. As for the kids, she’d already lost hope in them. But at the end of the day, she was still their mother.

Her eyes stung, but she forced herself to take a step back. “I can compromise on the first time, but the fourth one is non-negotiable.”

“Fine.” The corner of Calvin’s mouth lifted slightly.

He stood, walked over to the safe, and pulled out an old document with yellowing edges. Then, he set it down in front of her.

Elise’s temples throbbed. She had a bad feeling about this.

When she finally saw what he’d handed her, she froze. This wasn’t the divorce agreement she’d mailed to him. It was the prenuptial agreement she’d drawn up on her own six years ago, when she’d been hopelessly in love with him.
