You Want Me Back? Sorry, Request Rejected Chapter 28

Jordan curled his fingers into his palm, covering the scar as he comforted Elise softly.

“I’m sorry… I’ll take responsibility.” Elise’s eyes turned even redder.

Keith secretly scoffed at this. Was Jordan actually using a scar from over ten years ago to scam an innocent woman?

He snorted inwardly. Jordan was getting more and more shameless by the day. He really should’ve dragged Isabel, who’d just been forced to the dentist, back here to enjoy Jordan’s two-faced act.

“How are you planning to take responsibility?” Jordan quirked his lips. He lifted his hand, trying to wipe away the teardrop hanging from the corner of Elise’s eye.

She turned her head away, quickly rubbing her eyes with the edge of her sleeve, dodging his hand. She said, “I’ll save up and find you the best plastic surgeon.”

Jordan was stupefied, and Keith snorted. He was usually very professional, but sometimes, he just couldn’t hold back his laughter.

Elise didn’t notice how dark Jordan’s face had gone. She earnestly explained, “Cosmetic repair surgery is really advanced now. I remember there are some excellent doctors who specialize in scar removal for the hands, even just here in Halston. I’ll definitely find the best one for you, Mr. Steele.”

Jordan’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “You sure sound rich, Ms. Stanton. That’s very generous of you.”

Was she so eager to draw a line between them? What a heartless thing. She’d forgotten him so thoroughly.

“I’m not that rich…” Elise didn’t catch the sarcasm in his tone. She shook her head and went on, “But I’ll work hard to earn more. I won’t make you wait too long.”

The divorce from Calvin was happening any day now. Knowing the Fulton family, there was no way they would give her a cent. She had to hurry and make her own money. The longer they waited to operate on a scar like that, the harder it would be to fix.

Jordan caught the serious look on her face, and his throat tightened painfully. “Okay. I’ll wait.”

“Um… It’s because I don’t want to touch my husband’s money,” Elise added softly, not wanting him to misunderstand.

“Oh. No rush.” Jordan picked up the bowl of soup and stirred it lazily. If she didn’t even want to use Calvin’s money anymore, she had to be utterly disappointed in him. That secretly delighted him, though he didn’t let it show on his face.

Keith took in every nuance of Jordan’s expression, stunned by what he was seeing. Who on earth was Elise? Just a few sentences from her, and Jordan was practically rolling over for her to rub his belly!

Just then, a muffled voice thick with tears came from outside the room. Isabel burst into the room, cupping both of her swollen cheeks. Her cute little pigtails frizzed out in all directions, and her eyes were full of outrage.

“Uncle Jordan! Uncle Jordan! I’m telling on you to Daddy! You said that getting a tooth pulled wouldn’t hurt. You lied to me!”

“Izzy?” Elise blinked in surprise.

Isabel paused in the middle of her rant. “Pretty lady, what are you doing here with Uncle Jordan?”

When she opened her mouth, the gap from her freshly yanked front tooth made her words whistle a little. She had to work hard to keep the noise from getting out.

Only then did Elise finally put the pieces together. So, Isabel’s uncle, who was drop-dead gorgeous and would rather marry his job than a wife, was actually Jordan.

She was secretly stunned.

Jordan ignored Isabel’s earlier accusation and did the introductions. “Right. This is my niece, Isabel Steele.”

She wasn’t his daughter.

Suddenly, Elise remembered what Isabel had told her back at the hospital. When Jordan was a kid, he once had a barking contest with a dog, and the dog made him cry.

Jordan’s aristocratic, aloof face appeared in her mind as she thought about that story, and she couldn’t help laughing. It was really hard to mash those two images into the same person.

Jordan caught the fleeting smile on Elise’s face, and his mood instantly lifted. The very next second, because he let his guard down for just a moment, Isabel swooped in like a bandit and snatched the spare bowl of soup that Elise had prepared.

She downed it but was still unsatisfied. Then, acting far older than her years, she egged Jordan on. “Uncle Jordan, the pretty lady has treated us to soup. Isn’t there a saying that goes, ‘the more polite you are, the less you offend’?”

Jordan felt a headache coming on. “It’s ‘returning a kindness.'”

Elise couldn’t help laughing again.

Jordan’s gaze shifted to her. “Ms. Stanton, would you do us the honor of having dinner with us?”

Isabel nodded vigorously, her sparkling eyes full of anticipation as she stared at Elise.

Elise couldn’t bring herself to refuse. She smiled and said, “Sure.”
