You Want Me Back? Sorry, Request Rejected Chapter 08By Novel7s / June 5, 2026 You Want Me Back? Sorry, Request Rejected Chapter 08The rain fell over Halston all night. The light above the operating room flicked on and off. By dawn, Elise finally managed to lift her heavy eyelids. The burning ache all over her body still hadn’t faded. “Ms. Stanton, you have a viral infection. Good thing you came in when you did–any later, and it could’ve turned into pneumonia. Your life would’ve been in danger then. We tried calling your husband several times but couldn’t get through. “In the end, your phone died and shut off. You should let him know what’s going on. Your family must be worried sick right now.” A young nurse who had stopped by to change Elise’s IV drip chattered on at her bedside, then handed over a fully charged phone. Elise’s expression didn’t change at her words, but her heart ached. She forced a smile and said, ” Okay. Thanks.” How could Calvin and the others have time to answer her call when they were busy being a happy family of four with Sabrina? Elise powered her phone back on. As the screen lit up, a missed call from Calvin appeared. She froze for a moment. The very next second, the special ringtone she’d set for Regina rang out. Worried something might’ve happened to her, she quickly answered.” Hello? Gina, what happ-” “Mommy!” Regina cut her off, her voice icy as she screamed, “Do you know that Sabrina almost died because of what you did?” Elise’s face went blank. “Gina, what are you talking about?” Regina’s voice only grew more agitated. “The doctor said Sabrina had an allergic reaction to mugwort because she wore your clothes! Daddy stayed with her all night just to get her through the worst of it. “If you hadn’t put that mugwort on your pajamas, she never would’ve been in danger. You’re a murderer! Why aren’t you the one lying on that hospital bed?” Hearing the daughter she’d brought into this world curse her like that made Elise feel as if every bone in her body were being sawed apart by a rusted knife. Clothes scented with mugwort… When Rowan and Regina were born, both of them were frail and sickly. Their pediatrician had suggested traditional herbal therapy, and mugwort was the only medicinal scent their bodies could tolerate. So, over the years, Elise had gotten into the habit of lightly scenting her own clothes with mugwort. There was no such thing as a harmless remedy. When she first started wearing those clothes, angry red welts had flared up all over her skin. But day after day, for the sake of the twins‘ health, she’d endured it. Eventually, her body had grown immune to it, and a faint herbal scent clung to her all year round. Calvin had scorned her for it more than once, calling her a “walking apothecary“. “Gina, calm down.” Elise’s voice cooled. “You need to understand that she’s the one who took my pajamas without asking. How is it my fault now that she’s allergic to mugwort?” It was the first time Regina had ever heard Elise speak to her in that tone. She went quiet for a beat, then snorted and snapped, “Why should we have asked you? You’re the one who moved out, and Daddy said Sabrina could wear the pajamas. “Besides, when things went wrong last night, you deliberately ignored Daddy’s calls. You’re awful, Mommy. I’m never talking to you again!” With that, she hung up on Elise in a huff and immediately blocked her number again. This time, she was going to block her for a whole year! She was the youngest in the family, and Elise had always cared about her the most. But now, she didn’t want to have anything to do with Elise anymore. She was going to make Elise seriously reflect on what she’d done wrong. Elise’s hands and feet turned chilly. Her palms shook. She still couldn’t quite believe those words had come out of her daughter’s mouth. Her vision went blurry as tears filled her eyes, and the dull ache in her chest suddenly turned into a painful throbbing. Suddenly, a small hand holding a tissue appeared in front of her eyes. “Pretty lady, your eyes are raining. You should wipe them.” Elise looked up. A little girl in a hospital gown, about four years old, stood before her, her complexion pale and her hair a bit mussed. A pair of bright eyes watched her with open worry as the girl carefully lifted the tissue toward the corners of Elise’s eyes. She was the little munchkin from the bed next to hers. That morning, when Elise had first woken up, she’d happened to notice that the girl’s IV drip was nearly finished and was about to start backflowing.
