You Told Me to Handle It Myself, So I Did. Why Do You Regret It Now Chapter 05By Novel7s / May 21, 2026 You Told Me to Handle It Myself, So I Did. Why Do You Regret It Now Chapter 05After completing the handover procedures, I went to the law firm again. The lawyer said that since the traffic division had already confirmed my innocence, the case would be easy to handle. He suggested filing a lawsuit and letting him represent me fully. I agreed. When I got home, I started packing. Ethan and I had been college classmates. Back then, I had chased him for three years before finally becoming his girlfriend. After graduation, I stayed in this city for him without hesitation. I didn’t regret everything I had given over the past six years. But I no longer wanted to keep going. That was enough. That night, I took a long, hot shower and went to bed early. My flight was tomorrow morning, so I needed to wake up early. In the middle of the night, I felt one side of the bed sink down. Ethan leaned closer. My eyes flew open. I smelled the faint scent of cedar. It was Ethan’s usual scent. I sat up abruptly. The mattress let out a small creak because of my movement. Ethan’s hand stopped in midair. He seemed a little displeased, but he didn’t pull it back right away. The night was deep. By the faint light outside the window, I could see the sharp lines of his profile. “Let go.” I slapped Ethan’s hand away. My voice was hoarse from sleep. Ethan’s body stiffened. But he recovered quickly. He let out a soft laugh. There was a trace of careless ease in that sound. “Irene.” He spoke gently, almost in a whisper. “Are you still mad?” Still mad? I didn’t answer. I only laughed silently in my heart. Mad? Why would I be mad? After today, he and I would have nothing to do with each other anymore. Everything about him would be none of my concern. What was there to be mad about? “You came back alone.” “Ruby isn’t afraid to sleep alone tonight?” I thought he would be embarrassed. Or at least a little awkward. After all, the sarcasm in my words couldn’t have been any clearer. But he only laughed again. That laugh sounded like he was tolerating a spoiled child. “There you go again. You’re still jealous.” His fingers lightly brushed the side of my waist. “Silly girl.” “You’re my girlfriend.” “Why would I care that much about anyone else?” His tone was so casual, as if he was talking about something insignificant. I closed my eyes. A bone–deep exhaustion rose inside me. He was always like this. He used the gentlest tone to say sweet things, as if he truly loved me. How ridiculous. Just then, a sharp ringtone suddenly cut through the room. When Ethan saw the caller ID on his phone, his face stiffened instantly. The hand on my waist also pulled back on instinct. He didn’t answer right away. He only stared at the screen, then glanced at me. I said nothing. The phone rang again and again, as if it would never stop unless he picked up. In the end, Ethan sighed and pressed the answer button. Before he could speak, Ruby’s sobbing voice came through. “Ethan…” Her voice was so frail, as if a gust of wind could knock her over. “I… I fell…” “It hurts so much… I’m bleeding…” “Ethan, can you take me to the hospital? I’m so scared…” The man who had just sworn so confidently in front of me immediately threw off the covers and got out of bed. He moved so fast, as if Ruby’s injury might cost her life if he arrived one second late. He grabbed a jacket and pulled it on. Only when his hand touched the doorknob did he seem to suddenly remember something. His steps stopped hard. Then he slowly turned around. “Irene.” There was a trace of apology in his voice. “I’ll go and come right back.” “I promise. I’ll be back soon.” There was anxious urgency in Ethan’s voice. I only looked at him quietly. No anger. No rage. I nodded. “Go.” I didn’t look at him again and lay back down. Ethan’s gaze turned even more complicated. He seemed like he wanted to say something. In the end, he only pressed his lips together. He said nothing. Then he rushed out the door. The bedroom door slammed shut. The whole room fell silent again.
