You Told Me to Handle It Myself, So I Did. Why Do You Regret It Now Chapter 01

You Told Me to Handle It Myself, So I Did. Why Do You Regret It Now Chapter 01

At the police traffic division.

“Ma’am, we’ve already looked into the matter.”

“This had nothing to do with you. Just sign here, and you’re free to go.”

I let out a breath of relief.

A week ago, I saw an old woman fall by the side of the road, so I helped her up. Somehow, that turned into her accusing me of causing it.

For the past week, I had searched through footage from countless stores along that street.

Finally, one camera had clearly caught her falling on her own, proving my innocence.

After I signed the paperwork, I handed the documents back in. “Thank you.”

I thanked them and turned around.

Then I saw Ethan Shaw.

And Ruby Wells.

Ethan clearly hadn’t expected to see me there either.

“What are you doing here?”

When he saw my wrist hanging in a sling, he frowned again.

“You’re hurt?”

I snapped back to myself. “Oh, it’s nothing. Just a minor injury.”

It had happened that day when the old woman’s son got worked up and shoved me.

I stumbled back, slipped, and fractured my arm slightly when I fell.

Ethan had been out of town on business these past few days, so he still didn’t know.

Naturally, if this had been before, I would have called Ethan the second something like this happened.

Then I would have cried and asked him what to do, how I was supposed to handle it.

But this time, it was as if I had forgotten about Ethan entirely.

If he hadn’t appeared in front of me right now, I wouldn’t even have known he was back from his business trip.

He frowned.

“So what is it this time? Did your friend get harassed again, or did your junior not get her rent deposit back? Did you chase me all the way here to corner me?”

“But whatever it is, I have something very important to do today. Can you wait until I get home? I’ve been traveling for days, and I’m exhausted.”

After saying that, Ethan glanced at his watch, then took the document bag from Ruby’s hand.

“Didn’t I tell you not to carry things when you have a fever?”

“Come on. I’ll take you to get some medicine.”

The two of them turned to leave.

Ruby took a couple of steps, then turned back.

As if she was afraid I might misunderstand.

“Um, Irene, please don’t take this the wrong way.”

“Ethan and I just got back from a work trip today. I needed to come here to pick up a document, and he was worried I wouldn’t be able to get a ride, so he drove me over.”

“Um, you really didn’t have to follow him all the way here. Actually, do you want us to take you home first, and then we can…”

Ruby seemed like she wanted to say more, but Ethan called her name.

She answered him and hurried back to his side. Her bright voice drifted over.

“Ethan…”

“Thank you so much. If you hadn’t driven me here, I never would’ve gotten a ride…”

I smiled bitterly.

So this was Ethan’s so-called important thing.

After several days away on business, he personally drove Ruby here to pick up a file.

Then he was taking her to buy fever medicine.

But when it came to my problems, Ethan was always cold and impatient.

Ethan Shaw was a well-known lawyer.

When we first got together, I did ask him what to do whenever my friends ran into trouble.

At first, Ethan would give a few perfunctory answers.

But after it happened a few times, he started thinking I was bothering him with trivial nonsense.

He said, “Irene Harrison, can you try acting a little more mature?”

“Stop bothering me over and over again with those so-called friends of yours.”

“Just because I’m a lawyer, does that mean I have to be your free legal consultant? Yours and all your friends’?”

I remembered one time when my cramps were severe.

I asked Ethan to buy me some painkillers on his way home.

But when he came back, he was empty-handed.

When he saw that I was upset, his face also turned cold.

“Irene Harrison, we’re both adults.”

“I have my own work too. You shouldn’t bother me with every little thing.”

“Don’t you have a phone? Can’t you order delivery? Why do you have to make me buy it for you when you can do it yourself? Is my time not worth anything?”

“Irene, can you please be a little more independent and sensible?”

I was speechless.

Back then, even though I sulked, I thought that was simply the kind of person Ethan was.

He had strong boundaries and didn’t know how to be considerate.

But ever since Ruby, that intern, joined his firm, I saw many sides of Ethan I had never seen before.

For example, he would carry Ruby’s document bag when she had a fever, as if he was afraid she might get tired.

He would also drive out of his way to buy medicine for her without finding it troublesome at all.

A week ago, he had even gone on a business trip without telling me.

I couldn’t reach him, so I went to his office.

Only under his coworkers’ strange looks did I learn that he had gone on a work trip with Ruby.

That day, we had a huge fight over the phone.

I cried and asked Ethan if he didn’t think he had gone too far.

He didn’t even want to tell me he was traveling for work.

“Did you not even have time to call me or send one message?”

But Ethan said, “Irene Harrison, I’ve never asked this of you. Why are you always so clingy?”

“Just because we’re dating, I’m not allowed any freedom?”

“When are you going to grow up and stop inserting yourself into my life?”

That day, I suddenly figured it out.

For the next seven days, I didn’t send him a single message.

I didn’t call him once.

Ethan Shaw, the freedom you wanted.

I gave it to you.
