That night, I realized Ethan hadn’t come home.

But ever since Ruby said there were roaches in her apartment and he rushed over, then stayed out all night, I had stopped caring where Ethan went.

We had fought badly that time.

“I let her stay here for one night. It’s not what you think.”

Before I could say anything, Ruby rushed out too, looking flustered.

“I’m sorry. I was too scared to stay at a hotel alone.”

“Then Ethan brought me here. And since I was scared to sleep by myself, I asked him to stay in the room with me.”

As if she was terrified I might not misunderstand, Ruby glanced at Ethan.

“Oh no, Ethan, hurry and explain!”

“What if she gets the wrong idea about us?”

Strangely enough, after Ethan’s initial panic faded, he went back to that cold, superior look.

He frowned at me.

“Irene Harrison, Ruby is a guest I brought home. Don’t make things difficult for her.”

“I know you’re still angry because I went on that work trip without telling you.”

“Ruby is a young woman. She’s thin-skinned. Did you really have to say that to her?”
