You Kept the Don’s Daughter Waiting and Now She’s Someone Else’s Chapter 10

He led me inside.

I could see that the guests we’d invited were already arriving.

My mother was already there, waiting for me in the lounge.

When she saw me, she stood up at once.

“Nina.”

My father stood beside her, his eyes still red.

He shot a look at Damon, his voice gruff.

“Guess you showed up in time, young man.”

Damon straightened immediately.

“Mr. Conti, don’t worry. I’ll always be on time from now on.

My father grunted. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

Damon nodded. “You can hold me to it.”

My mother finally laughed.

Damon’s mother arrived a moment later.

The second she saw me, tears spilled down her face.

“Nina. I’ve been waiting for this day for years.”

Damon glanced at his watch.

“One thirty. Nina, go change into your dress. The ceremony starts at two thirty.”

In the dressing room, the new wedding gown hung on the rack.

Satin mermaid cut, the train dotted with tiny pearls and embroidered lilies of the valley.

Simple, clean, and stunning.

When I put it on, the stylist couldn’t help herself.

“Nina, this dress was made for you.”

I looked at myself in the mirror.

The veil had been swapped for a longer one, light and soft over my shoulders.

My makeup had been redone too.

The redness around my eyes covered up, leaving only brightness and calm.

I was just putting on my earrings when I heard raised voices outside.

“Sir, you can’t go in there.”

“Move. I need to see Nina.”

My hands stopped.

The next second, the door pushed open.

Luca stood in the doorway, breathing hard, his tie crooked, his groom’s boutonnière still pinned to his

chest.

When he saw me, he froze.

Probably because I’d changed dresses.

Probably because he finally realized I wasn’t playing games,

“Nina.”

His voice came out wrecked.

The stylist looked at me, unsure. I set down my earring

“Give us a minute.”

She nodded and slipped out, head down.

It was just me and Luca.

Luca stepped forward.

I stepped back.

He stopped in his tracks.

“Nina. I came to apologize. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have made you wait for Coral. I shouldn’t have said you were making a scene. Just come back with me, okay?”

I looked at him, calm.

“Come back where?”

Luca’s voice turned urgent. “To our wedding. The guests are still at the hotel. Our parents are waiting.”

“We can still make it if we go now. We can push the timeline. Don’t make a rash decision, Nina.”

“Nina, marriage is a lifelong commitment. You can’t marry Damon just because you’re angry.”

I listened to him, and suddenly I was just tired.

“Luca. I’m not angry.”

He blinked.

I looked at myself in the mirror, and then at him, reflected behind me.

“If I married you today, that’s what I’d regret. I’d spend every day remembering that on my wedding day, my groom would rather wait for a bridesmaid to fix her makeup than walk me out the door. I’d see Coral and remember how you chose her over me, over and over. I’d keep making excuses in our marriage. Making excuses for her calling you at midnight. For her needing you when she was sick. For her needing you when she was heartbroken. For her treating you like her on-call guy. And you’d keep telling me she means no

harm. You’d keep telling me I overthink things. Luca-just imagining that life makes me feel like I can’t

breathe.”
