Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 12

Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 12

“Get out.”

Colder this time.

He was mad. I didn’t know how to fix it. I ducked, pushed the door open, and stepped out.

I was at my building. The broken hallway light-out for over a month-had been fixed. Warm yellow glow

spilled across the entrance.

So that whole angry dismissal was… because I’d reached home?

Wait. How did he know where I lived?

Had he remembered everything?

No. If Evan had his memory back, I’d be in his bedroom right now. Not standing in the rain.

Even though I knew Evan hadn’t remembered me, I still had a restless night full of strange dreams.

The next morning, sleep-deprived, my reactions were sluggish. So when Mr. Waldron passed my desk for the third time, I didn’t even notice his hand had already landed on my chair.

“Little Xu.” He bent down, hot breath mixed with cigarette smoke. “Yesterday’s work must’ve been tough on

you…”

I snapped back to attention and edged right, keeping it subtle. “Not at all. I learned a lot.”

“Good, good. Youth is wonderful-you pick things up fast.”

He didn’t give up. His hand slid down the back of the chair, fingers nearly brushing my shoulder. I had

nowhere left to retreat.

The discomfort hit me like a wave. I shot to my feet.

“Mr. Waldron! If I’m not mistaken, I’m about the same age as your daughter. Have some self-respect.”

My voice carried across the whole floor. Heads snapped up from nearby desks. Some people widened their eyes, some secretly took out their phones, and it seemed like someone was laughing at him.

Waldron’s face went red with rage. He jabbed a finger at me, shrill and vicious: “Don’t give me that innocent

act. I saw you getting into Mr. Chase’s car last night!”

I froze. His humiliating words felt like a bucket of filthy water being dumped over my head.

All restraint, all professionalism-snapped.

I grabbed the half-full glass of water on my desk, swung my arm, and smashed it hard against his head with

all my strength.

Crash.

Water everywhere.

Waldron clutched his bleeding forehead, staggering back in disbelief.

I was panting, palm numb from the impact. “You fat, greasy piece of trash. Try touching me again. Try lying

about me again.”

His lips quivered. “You-you hit me? You’re just an intern, you-”

The office went dead quiet.

A tall figure stood there. No one knew how long he’d been watching.
