When the Luna Falls Asleep Chapter 06

When the Luna Falls Asleep Chapter 06

Jonathan’s POV

The realization hit me like a thunderclap.

Today really was Allison’s birthday.

During the five years we had been mates, I had never missed it.

Every year, I prepared flowers, a birthday cake, and carefully chosen gifts.

Allison would throw her arms around me, kiss me on the lips, and beam that bright, sweet smile.

“Thank you, Jonathan. I love you the most.”

Back then, I had thought that as long as I could keep seeing Allison smile, anything I did would be worth it.

But this year, Allison had spent most of it asleep.

I had been so busy planning Austin’s baby shower that I completely forgot it was her birthday too.

And now that I thought about it, ever since she woke up…

She had barely smiled at all.

What was even worse was that our entire family had gathered to celebrate Austin, yet not one of us had remembered Allison.

Was that why she had arranged that phone call?

Just to remind us?

And I had accused her of causing trouble.

I had spoken to her so harshly.

She must have been heartbroken.

My chest tightened suddenly.

My heart pounded hard against my ribs, and my wolf let out a dissatisfied growl.

For the first time in a long while, I desperately wanted to see Allison.

The truth was, what happened between Chloe and me had started as an accident.

At the time, Allison’s narcolepsy had been getting worse and worse.

Sometimes she slept for days at a time.

Watching her fade away little by little left me exhausted.

Helpless.

I started drinking more than I should have.

One night, Chloe came to visit Allison. Unfortunately, she happened to be going through her heat.

I watched her stand beneath freezing water, desperately trying to suppress her instincts.

And eventually, I lost control of mine and tore her shirt apart.

That night became a mistake neither of us could take back.

When I woke up the next morning, I apologized to her over and over again. But Chloe simply wrapped her arms around me and gently stroked my hair.

“It’s okay,” she whispered.

That was when I learned the truth.

She had loved me for years.

She had simply never said anything because she was Allison’s best friend.

I should have pushed her away.

I knew that.

But I was so tired.

I had only recently inherited leadership of the pack.

Pressure came from every direction.

Every day felt suffocating.

Against my wolf’s objections, I found myself craving the peace I felt whenever Chloe held me.

After that night, neither of us brought it up again.

Yet every time she appeared—whether at pack meetings, social gatherings, or mate events—my eyes would instinctively seek her out.

I became curious about everything.

Her thoughts. Her smile. Her habits. Without realizing it, I had begun paying attention.

Then came the Luna Coronation.

I stood before the altar while the entire pack watched their Alpha.

And waited.

Waited for Allison.

Our future Luna.

But she never came.

My parents sat in the front row with cold expressions, as though they had always known our mate bond would end this way.

Lauren and Shane called me in tears.

Allison had fallen asleep again. No matter what they did, they couldn’t wake her.

I looked around at the crowd filling the hall.

And for the first time, my shoulders sagged beneath the weight of it all.

For a brief moment, I found myself wondering if my parents had been right from the beginning.

I refused to admit it.

My pride wouldn’t allow it.

Then Chloe took my hand.

“I can help you,” she said softly.

The coronation proceeded smoothly after that.

When Chloe walked down the aisle in her wedding gown, I couldn’t help being stunned.

She was beautiful. And when my lips touched hers, a thought crossed my mind that I hated myself for having.

Maybe this was the mate I truly wanted.

Maybe this was the life I wanted.

Not spending every day waiting for a wife who could fall asleep at any moment and disappear from my world without warning.

A month later, Allison woke up.

When she learned she had missed the coronation and that Chloe had stepped in for her, she didn’t make a scene.

Instead, she smiled through reddened eyes, “Chloe, thank goodness you were there.”

She laughed softly, “Otherwise Jonathan would’ve been so embarrassed.”

Not long afterward, Allison fell asleep again.

I had no idea when she would wake up this time.

As I left her room and closed the door behind me, I found Chloe standing in the hallway.

She looked nervous, both hands were hidden behind her back.

Something felt off.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

I didn’t believe her.

Pretending to walk past, I suddenly reached behind her and snatched away whatever she was hiding.

I looked down.

A pregnancy test.

Two lines.

For several seconds, my brain refused to process what I was seeing.

“What does this mean?” I asked blankly.

Then realization hit, “You’re pregnant?”

Tears immediately filled Chloe’s eyes, “I’ll get rid of it.”

Her voice shook, “I won’t have the baby. I promise. I won’t let it be born. I swear—”

The panic and fear in her voice pierced straight through me.

Without thinking, I pulled her into my arms, “No.”

She froze, “What?”

“Keep the baby.”

She stared at me in disbelief, “But Allison—”

“It’s okay.” I tightened my arms around her and gently stroked her hair, “It’s okay.”

For the first time in months, I felt something that almost resembled hope.

“We’re going to have a baby.”
