When Rome Finally Snowed, The Don Lost Me Chapter 07

I went back to the TV department on the eighteenth 

floor and walked into the director’s office to resign. 

He sighed. “Renee, you won’t get any severance if you quit voluntarily. Won’t you wait?” 

I shook my head. “I’m not waiting.” 

No one at the network knew about me and Zayne. 

They wouldn’t tell him if I resigned. 

“Renee, you’ve been here three years. Everyone knows 

how good you are. Once Celine goes back to filming, the 

primetime spot will be yours again. I’ll transfer you 

back.” 

The director patted my shoulder, trying to convince me 

to stay. 

I smiled and refused. “Don’t bother. I’m going home.” 

“Home?” 

“Yeah. Back to Chicago.” 

He pressed. 

“The primetime anchor at Bellandi News Network. People would kill for that job. Are you really giving it up?” 

I smiled softly. “I have a journalism degree. I’ll keep working in this field. I know Chicago will have a place 

for me.” 

I left Bellandi News Network and took a taxi back to the 

oceanfront mansion in the Hamptons. 

Every little thing inside was picked out by me. 

I looked around and realized the only things that truly belonged to me were my old college books. 

Everything else was bought by Zayne. 

Two walkin closets were stuffed with jewelry I couldn’t 

possibly take with me. 

I didn’t want any of it anyway. 

The only thing I packed was a Christmas music box he’d handmade for me in Italy for my nineteenth 

birthday. 

As soon as it got dark, I dragged my suitcase toward the 

door. 

Celine showed up with two bodyguards. 

She blocked my way and smiled contemptuously. 

“Renee, you might have slept with Zayne for seven years, but you were just a toy for him to use when he 

was bored.” 

“Do you know he chased me for six months in college? He brought me breakfast every single morning. I said I liked skiing, and he skipped class to fly with me to 

Whistler, Canada.” 

My flight was leaving soon. I cut her off. 

“Miss Celine-” 

Before I could finish, she slapped me hard across the 

face. 

“Renee, you bitch. You don’t have the right to compete 

with me for him.” 

I froze. Pumpkin darted out of her bed and threw 

herself at Celine, meowing loudly. 

“Stupid cat! How dare you jump at me.” 

Celine frowned and kicked Pumpkin hard. 

Pumpkin flew three feet. She struggled to stand, then 

collapsed again. 

Blood came out of her mouth. 

She whimpered and trembled. 

My breath caught. 

I raised my hand to hit Celine back, but someone 

grabbed my wrist from behind and pulled me into a 

hard chest. 

The grip was painful. 

I looked up and stared into dark, cold eyes. 

“Zayne, help Pumpkin. Please.” 

My voice shook as I spoke. 

Zayne glanced at the cat on the floor and nodded at his 

bodyguard. 

“Call the best vet in Rome.”
