When Rome Finally Snowed, The Don Lost Me Chapter 01

The second Zayne spoke, I felt as if I’d been slapped across the face.

My cheeks burned.

“What’s that look? Did you really fall in love with me?”

He leaned lazily against the headboard and stared at me.

I lifted my head and glanced at his lean, sexy lats. Fresh scratch marks still marked his skin.

From eighteen to twentyfour.

I’d been in this arrangement with Zayne for exactly seven years.

At first, he sent a driver to pick me up from the NYU journalism department every other day.

Later, I lived here most of the time when I wasn’t in class.

It was a mansion on the Hamptons oceanfront. Through the glass, the Atlantic looked endless.

I adopted an orange cat named Pumpkin.

He was busy with work, but he still patiently helped me pick out toys for her.

He’d even make me a bowl of chicken noodle soup when I was sick.

We looked like a real couple.

I fixed my gaze back on the fivecarat diamond on my middle finger.

Zayne bent down and kissed my lips. His voice was rough.

“You’ve always wanted this ring. Consider it a breakup gift.”

“From now on, we’re just boss and employee.”

“Celine is a huge movie star. You’re a wellknown Rome news anchor. Don’t get bitter and try to ruin her.”

“I protect my own.”

His words were a threat, plain and simple.

Bitterness burned in my eyes.

I forced a small smile.

I was about to speak.

My stomach suddenly churned. I rushed straight to the bathroom.
