When My Wolf Went Silent Chapter 05

When My Wolf Went Silent Chapter 05

“You’re so thin, and now you’re pretending to diet.”

My chest ached in sharp, prickling bursts at Archer’s sudden concern, but it only lasted a moment.

I forced a smile. “Landon… he likes me a little slimmer.”

Landon Foster, the son of the Beta from the neighboring pack, was the so-called “cheating guy” Archer’s mother had made up for me.

In reality, the neighboring Beta had only a daughter, no son.

But Archer had believed it.

Ever since I had pushed him away and he left the pack in anger, I had never seen him again.

The moment he heard my words, his face darkened like iron.

Simone, sitting beside him, laughed softly. “Harper, don’t misunderstand. Archer is just protective of his pack members. Whenever someone tries to diet, he gets angry. When I was abroad and wanted to lose weight, he scolded me plenty of times too.”

She smiled at Archer as if to coax him. “Archer, see? I’m right.”

He didn’t even glance at her. Instead, he pushed his chair back with sharp anger.

“I’m going to the bathroom.”

He didn’t look at me again, didn’t look at Simone, and strode toward the bathroom.

I watched his retreating back, my chest tightening again. Had I messed it up?

Messed up his new life. Messed up his new love.

Guilt pricked at me sharply, and just then, Simone, sitting across the table, grabbed a cup of hot coffee and flung it in my face.

“You shameless bitch. You think I’m stupid? You keep playing the victim, trying to seduce my mate!”

The hot liquid burned my cheeks, but I gripped my hands tightly and, swallowing my embarrassment, said, “I’m sorry. If I made you misunderstand, I apologize.”

Simone sneered and stood up, then slapped me across the face.

“You think faking a lame leg will make Archer change his mind?”

“I’ll tell you, Archer is mine for life. Don’t think being his fated mate gives you the right to take him.”

“You two severed your mate bond. You have nothing to do with him anymore!”

The slap stung, leaving my cheek numb.

I could tolerate the coffee—it was my own shameless longing for Archer’s warmth—but she couldn’t strike me.

Without thinking, I pushed her back.

“Simone, if you touch me again, I’ll report this to the council.”

But before I could even finish, Simone suddenly collapsed onto the floor, wailing loudly.

“Oh, my stomach! Help! Someone attacked a pregnant woman!”

I stared at her sprawled figure in disbelief, then down at my own hands.

I had been sick for six years. Even putting on clothes exhausted me, even holding a cup of water was sometimes impossible.

I had no strength to push Simone, and when I had, it was only to stop her from hitting me.

Yet suddenly, she was lying on the floor, screaming as if she had been beaten.

Before I could react, Archer appeared in the lobby. Seeing Simone on the floor, he rushed to her side, panic clear in his voice.

“Simone, Simone, are you okay?”

Simone clutched at his shirt collar, crying. “Archer, help me, save my baby. Harper, Harper, she’s trying to kill me!”

She hurried to explain, her voice shaking.

“The moment you left, she started screaming at me. Said I was only getting the leftovers she threw away. Said if she ever wanted you back, you’d crawl back to her immediately.”

Her eyes turned red.

“I lost control… I threw coffee at her.”

“But she just got even angrier.”

“She called me a toxic slut. Said I was shameless for stealing men other women didn’t want anymore.”
