When My Wolf Went Silent Chapter 02

When My Wolf Went Silent Chapter 02

When I could no longer endure chemotherapy, it was holding the photos of Archer and me that kept me alive. Clutching those pictures, I forced myself to keep breathing.

Over the years, I went through dozens of surgeries.

More than once, my wolf completely lost control. My vital signs plunged to the lowest point. They rushed me into the ER, my heart barely beating.

Each time, it was my mother at my bedside, her voice hoarse from crying, screaming my name over and over.

“Harper, have you forgotten? You said you would survive!”

“You promised that once you got better, you would personally explain the misunderstanding to Archer!”

“You even said I would come with you to the Elite Academy to bring Archer back!”

“If you die, you will never see him again!”

It was because she mentioned Archer again and again that I was dragged back from the edge of death.

But even so, my wolf remained untreatable.

And Archer had long since moved on with his life.

A future Luna, a new pack life, soon to seal the mate bond.

Even so, selfishly, I wanted just a little time with him, in the final stretch of my life, even if it was only a brief, calm moment together.

Because there was not a single day I had not thought of him.

So when I learned that Archer had returned to the pack, even though the pack doctor had warned me that I could die at any moment after leaving the hospital, I forced myself to leave.

I had just seen Luna Kendra out when exhaustion overcame me.

When I woke, I heard his voice outside.

I froze.

Six years ago, Archer had hated me completely.

He had stood outside my door for three days and nights.

He only wanted to grab me by the throat, red-eyed, demanding to know why I had betrayed him.

When I had cried and said the words, “I don’t love you anymore,” he had lost control and punched the glass of the door.

He did not touch me, but the disgust in his eyes had hurt more than any blow.

After that, whenever he saw me in the pack, he would turn away. Passing by my house would make him frown.

The dinners we used to go to together? He never returned.

And later, if anyone mentioned my name, he would cut them off coldly.

“What’s the point of bringing up Harper? You think it’s fine, I think it’s disgusting.”

Even the day he left the pack, I ran through the rain to the airport, desperate to see him one last time.

He had thrown our matching rings and the phone full of every photo of us at my feet, shattering them, and walked away without a backward glance.

But six years later, he came to my house.

Through the crack of the half-open door, I understood why.

Archer was holding his future Luna’s hand tightly.

“Laurel,” he asked gently, patient as ever, “are you still worried about what happened six years ago? Is that why you didn’t want Harper to come with me to pick the wedding dress and bonding ring?”

“I stopped liking Harper a long time ago. I’ve completely let go. We grew up together. We can’t be lovers, but we can still be friends,” Archer said softly.

Simone smiled, looping her arm through Archer’s.

“Archer told me everything about you two long ago. Even though Harper cheated six years ago, we were all young, and it takes two to make a fight. Archer was at fault too.”

“I actually have to thank Harper,” she added, smiling. “If she hadn’t rejected Archer, I wouldn’t have met such a perfect mate. There’s no reason to dwell on six years ago.”

Simone squeezed Archer’s arm gently again.

“And honestly, asking Harper to come help pick the dress was my idea. Archer and I haven’t been back to the pack in six years. I don’t trust my own taste here.”
