When Love Burned to Nothing Chapter 10

I stood up and looked at Ken coldly.

“You really are heartless.”

He froze, clearly not expecting me to accuse him the moment we met again. Panicking, he rushed over and wrapped his arms around me.

“I just wanted to avenge you. I dragged them all here to apologize to you.”

As he spoke, he glanced back at the three girls.

Their eyes were still clouded with confusion. When they saw Ken gesturing toward them, they instinctively walked over.

After surviving the flames, they obeyed Ken without thinking.

The three of them lined up nervously and called me “Mom”.

Nearby, Bianca shuddered, her face twisted with hatred as she stared at us.

“You monsters!” she hissed. “I won’t let this go!”

With that, she turned and vanished into the air.

Ken looked back at me and noticed my body starting to fade, turning translucent.

He clutched me in panic.

“Linette, I don’t want to be separated from you ever again!”

I shoved him away impatiently and pointed toward the firefighters still working inside the house.

“They risked their lives to save people. And you almost got everyone in your apartment building killed.”

Luckily, it was daytime. The smoke was spotted quickly.

Besides, most people were at work. If this had happened at night, while everyone was asleep…

I didn’t even want to imagine it.

I was already dead. Why should innocent people have been dragged into this?

Ken had always been selfish. He never thought about the consequences. Falling in love with him was the biggest mistake of my life.

He stared at me in shock, then collapsed to the floor, looking lost.

“What was I supposed to do?” he shouted. “When I realized I loved you, you were already dead. I just wanted revenge for you. What did I do wrong?”

Looking at him, I knew he hadn’t heard a single word I said.

Someone like him would never believe he was at fault.

I turned away and walked over to the three girls, taking their hands.

Carly looked at me and called softly, “Mom, I’m sorry. We were wrong.”

Trista followed, her voice trembling. “Yeah. We hurt you.”

Queenie didn’t really understand what was happening, but she obediently called out, “Sorry, Mom.”

They had made mistakes, but they were only children, shaped by what they were taught.

Tears filled my eyes as I bent down and gently stroked their heads. “It’s okay, girls. I’m taking you away from here.”

I led them toward the exit.

Ken watched the four of us leave and staggered to his feet, reaching for me.

“Linette, you can’t abandon me! I’m your husband. How could you leave me?”

I looked back at him and let out a cold laugh. “Ken, we’re already divorced.”

We had cut ties even when I was alive. And now, he mattered even less to me.

He stumbled forward, watching our figures grow faint and transparent.

Clutching his head, he screamed in agony, “Linette, if there’s a next life, would you choose me again?”

I didn’t turn around. I only soothed the girls gently.

As I faded into the air, I left him with one final answer.

“Never.”

That was my punishment for him.

From then on, love was something he would never have

Ken’s face twisted as he screamed in pain. But he was already dead, too.

In the end, we all disappeared from this world.

I was finally free of him forever.
