After driving off a pack of rogues trying to steal moonstones at the border, my mate, Alpha Rhett, handed his water canteen to his first love, Vivian.

I didn’t argue. I didn’t scream. I simply and calmly told him I wanted to sever our mate bond.

“Because I let her use my canteen?”

“Yes.”

Rhett didn’t explode in anger. He laughed.

“Fine, suit yourself.”

“Just make sure you actually go through with it this time. Don’t come crawling back to the pack house begging me not to leave you before you’ve even made it halfway.”

His Beta, Sandy, tried to mediate.

“Alpha, please just apologize to Luna Aurora. If she actually gets upset this time, it’s going to be a mess.”

Rhett’s eyes were cold. A mocking smirk curled on his lips.

“All I see is her paranoia acting up again. She’s just looking for reasons to give me a headache.”

“Remember when she left her own pack and family behind just to come to Wolfspine Citadel and mate with me?”

“If she can stay mad for two whole days, I’ll be impressed.”

Yes. I loved him for three years. I willingly turned my back on my birth pack for him.

But what he would never understand was this: you can always join a new pack, but a disloyal mate should have their bond severed without delay.

I filed a formal request for mate bond severance with the Pack Council. I’d already found a new pack willing to take me in. Once I wrapped up the rest of pack related issues, I would be gone.

This time, nothing would make me turn back.

Perhaps he was furious that I’d embarrassed him in front of the pack by publicly requesting a separation, damaging his authority as Alpha.

Whatever the reason, Rhett didn’t accompany me back. He left the battlefield with Vivian at his side.

I saw his moonstone lying in the thorn bushes at the border where he’d dropped it. I sighed and bent down to pick it up.

I found a guard and tried to hand over the key, asking him to pass it along.

The guard glanced behind me. “Alpha Rhett is just up ahead. Luna, you could give it to him yourself.”

I followed his gaze and spotted Rhett sitting with a few of his top wolves, a cigarette dangling between his fingers. They were laughing and talking easily.

“Luna seems serious this time. Alpha, don’t take this lightly. Where else are you going to find a mate as noble as her? Beautiful, loyal, pureblood.”

“Just apologize. Soothe her a little. Don’t actually let her down. You’ll regret it.”

Rhett fiddled with the lighter in his hand and shrugged, utterly unconcerned. “Relax. I know exactly how she operates.”

“You think I forgot how she left her entire pack behind just to follow me to Wolfspine Citadel?”

“I’m telling you, tomorrow at the latest, she’ll break and come begging to make up.”

Vivian, sitting beside him, casually snatched the lighter from his hand and laughed. “Never pegged you for a guy who understands women so well, Alpha. So why do you always snap and yell at me?”

The table erupted in laughter.

“Aurora’s pulled this stunt plenty of times. I’m not bowing first this time.”

Rhett shifted in his seat, his tone utterly dismissive.

“She’s nothing but a sheltered canary. Spoiled rotten since she was a pup.”

“She needs to learn her lesson this time. Let’s see if she dares to throw around the words ‘sever the mate bond’ ever again.”

“Besides…” He paused. “You think I’d actually give up an obedient mate? I’m just teasing her. Keeps her on her toes. Haven’t you noticed she’s been way more alert lately?”

“Vivian forgot her canteen. As the Alpha sworn to protect this pack, I let her use mine. What the hell’s she throwing a fit for?”

One of the Betas cut in. “You think she suspects there’s something going on between you two?”
