The car didn’t drive directly to the old street.

We got out at the corner and walked the rest of the way.

Alessio’s suit was too expensive for the neighborhood.

As we walked past the barbecue stalls and dessert trucks, he drew more than a few stares.

Someone recognized him and raised a phone to film.

He didn’t try to hide.

When the ring vendor saw us, she immediately poked her head out from behind her stall.

“Back again?”

Before I could speak, Alessio nodded.

“Mm.”

I glanced at him.

He coughed lightly.

The vendor’s smile widened.

“Still wearing the ring? How’s it feel? Digging in at all?”

Alessio answered with complete seriousness.

“It is.”

The vendor burst out laughing.

“That’s how you know it’s cheap. It’s the thought that counts.”

Alessio looked at me.

“Yes.”

His answer was so solemn that even I had to smile.

We sat down at the small food stall next door.

The plastic stools were low to the ground.

When Alessio sat, his long legs had nowhere to go, and he had to fold them awkwardly.

The owner brought over two sandwiches and two bowls of soup.

Alessio took a napkin from the dispenser and handed it to me.

I took it.

“You never used to do things like this.”

He unwrapped his sandwich.

“No one ever taught me.”

“Alessio Ricci needs to be taught?”

“Yes.”

As he said that, he started picking the parsley out of my soup, piece by piece, and placing it on a small plate.

I looked at him.

He explained, “You don’t like it.”

My hand paused around my spoon.

It was such a small detail.

So small that even I had almost forgotten.
