Alessio didn’t open the ring box in the ballroom.

In front of all the guests, he simply held it in his palm.

“That’s all for tonight.”

Isabella froze.

A low murmur went through the crowd.

But Alessio was only looking at me.

“Do you want to leave?”

I looked at him.

“Now?”

“Mm.”

“This is the Ricci family’s anniversary gala.”

“I know.”

He held out his hand, not touching me.

“You don’t like these kinds of events.”

I looked down at his hand.

The $29.99 silver band was still on his ring finger, the red mark on his knuckle not yet faded.

I didn’t take his hand.

I just started walking toward the exit.

Alessio followed, half a step behind me.

This time, as the entire hall watched us leave, not a single member of the Ricci family tried to stop us.

Once we were outside the ballroom, the cool night air hit my face.

My shoulders felt cold.

Alessio draped his suit jacket over them.

His touch was gentle.

“Where do you want to go?”

I said, “I’m hungry.”

He paused.

“You didn’t eat?”

“The food at your galas looks beautiful, but it tastes like props.”

Alessio was silent for two seconds.

“The street market?”

I turned to look at him.

The tips of his ears were red.

He added, “The vendor said the sandwich place next door was good.”

At last, I smiled.

Alessio looked at me, and the tension in his eyes seemed to finally, slowly, release.
